I have received few emails on whether one should go for part time MBA or full time MBA? and whether part time MBA can boosts someone’s career or not etc..
Here are my thoughts:
Part time MBA
If you have substantial work experience [more than 6 years] in the industry and if you plan to stick to the same industry, go for part time MBA.
But at the same time, make sure that you enroll in a A grade college.
All said and done, part time MBA is not seen in the same light as full time, but a good college/brand name will suffice for that. And the reality is that it’s almost impossible to shift career 180 degrees using your part time degree.
Full time MBA
If you are a fresher or have work experience of less than 2 years, I strongly suggest you to go for full time MBA. Also, if you are looking for a career shift [let's say from IT coding to sales/marketing], this is the right time to make that change.
After having stayed in the industry for 4+ years, doing a full time MBA/and a career shift, will most probably erode all your previous work experience benefits. And of course, it will hurt your ego to be treated as a fresher [thats a reality, accept it or not!].
So what are the things you should take care of in part time MBA programmes?
Keep in mind the following points if you are attending a part time MBA programme:
- Maximize your learning. Learn ways to implement the classroom studies in your workplace. For e.g. if you are attending a marketing course, make sure that you speak to marketing folks in your company [even if they you hate them] and get their insights. Real value of a part time MBA lies in implementation and not the theoretical part.
- Network, network and network. Most of the part time courses are attended by execs and chances are that they will bring a very rich experience to the classroom. Use that. Network as much as possible. I am aware of few CxOs attending part time MBA courses. Build relationships with these guys. They can provide you the springboard you have been looking for.
- Know what to expect - No matter where you do your part MBA from, know what to expect from the course. Few companies have clear policies to not treat part time MBAs on the same lines as full time, irrespective of the college/brand. Accept these. Honestly, there is nothing that you can do about this. Manage your own expectation by exploring opportunity with companies which have no issues with part time MBAs [typically mid/small sized].
- During the course of your MBA, network with the team that you wanna get into. For e.g. if you want to shift to Marketing/Product Management, build relationship with those folks in your company.Remember that you don’t get a crown just because you have completed your MBA. You need to convince your company that “you can handle’ the new role.
- And while you are studying, make sure that you do your office assignments very well. ‘If you perform well, you get a good referral from your boss and that will serve you to switch easily to your desired role. But if you are not a great performer, why would somebody take that risk by assigning you something which you have never done? Reputation plays a very big role, my friend.
- Last, but not the least – have tonnes of patience. Part time MBA may not help you achieve instant nirvana, and you might need to struggle to achieve the desired role/responsibility [true for full time as well].

I would suggest you go for Executive MBA program or else to secure an admission in premier scholls like ISB, FMS Delhi, MDI or else an MBA with your course of interest and part time MBA is not suitable and useful to you….. Even I have 2+ years of exp in IT in the field of Human Resources and lookinh to pursue full time MBA. FYI Part time MBA is not considered as an eligibility in companies like IBM,Accenture, Satyam ,etc…

hey buddy listen i just wanted to tel u that if u already working with company & u already having 2+,3+ experience then go for an part time it will benefited compare to other guys.
And if nt then go for regular student full time.
Options in ur hand. But don’t waste time to think so much on this.

obviously a full time one will be right for u but being in IBM where most IT professionals desire to work…u can also opt for a part time MBA so that u can stay in company for a longer time…good luck!

YES! Infact, I have seen CEOs of few companies [work ex>14 yrs] going for a MBA. First of all, it will give you fresh insights into the industry [and the way you look at things, which I am sure gets biased as one grows with age [nothing personal, but that's generally true!]..
But at the same time, full time MBA [from India] will not really help you [except probably from IIM A's 1 yr progrm/ISB]. Either you go for US-based colleges [much focussed] or probably go for part time [from IIMs]?

I suggest you to consider 1 year full-time MBA very strongly. If u have already taken GMAT then try for SPJAIN Dubai (16 lacs – http://www.spjain.org/) , or Great Lakes Chennai (12 lacs – http://greatlakes.edu.in)
Another good school is EABS Pune (6 lacs – http://www.eabs.ac.in/admission.html). This doesn’t require any score. They have their won test on Feb 1st.
All three schools have 30th Jan as deadline. I suggest you to try with EABS and figure out how it goes, once u get an admission.

I am an ambitious and dedicated individual with a BE degree in Information Technology(2009) .Presently working as a Software Engineer in a small private firm in, my hometown(Total relevant experience,not more than 6 months!!).
Well, I am essentially seeking an HR profile and am convinced my mentoring & mediation
skills make me well suited to that domain, basically I’m planning for a domain switch from a Coder to HR ,as you may be knowing that these days there are openings developing for IT-HR Recruiter/Trainer,etc. Furthermore, I believe my analytical and technical bent of mind, positive and innovative approach and articulation skills are my biggest assets and would meet the necessary credentials for the assignment. I also possess strong planning, execution and interpersonal skills and am recognized as a sincere, proactive and self motivated team player.
And now for the problem, which is that though I know I have very little experience,yet for that switch to materialize I can not afford to do a Full-Time MBA in HR (for some personal & financial reasons of mine!!). Also, the last day to enroll for the SCDL(Symbiosis Distance learning) MBA program is nearing an end.
My query is that which is a better option in my case, A PART Time MBA or a Correspondence one ?? & in that case which Institutes are better & there details.(please do not suggest IGNOU as getting an MBA degree from there while working is quite a hefty task!!)

I am working in Telecom domain as as Product Support engineer from almost 4 years & just completed my MSC(in Telecom Technology).
Now i am planning to do the part time MBA in Telecom Management.
Could anyone please suggest me that it will be good for me or if any good option is available in the industry. Apart from that please suggest me the University as well.

I would not suggest part time MBA for students who are passed out in 2008-2009
well though part time programs are good but the problem is u wont be able to give proper time what ever amnt of commitment u want to give it go for full time if ur take is none other than part time firs land urself in a good position may be a manger or so atleast 5 years of experience and then go for part time .The courses are very rigrous here at MDI gurgaon sly to full time the only proble is how much time u will give it to IN mmbai i guess narsee monjee and JBIMMS
@ Dinesh it depends upon the individuals choice . Depending on whether you are a working professional or not . If you are working person then you will go for part time MBA & if you are not then go for full time MBA as you take my example I have done my MBA for full time from Sikkim Manipal University distance program.
