Nokia on a buying spree, acquires Symbian

Symbian OS logoNokia has acquired Symbian (rest of 52%, it doesn’t already own) and has also announced the launch of Symbian Foundation.

Symbian is already the leading open platform for mobile devices. Through this acquisition and the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, it will undisputedly be the most attractive platform for mobile innovation. This will drive the development of new and compelling, web-enabled applications to delight a new generation of consumers – Nokia CEO

Symbian OS is being used by all the leading manufactures like Sony, LG etc and Nokia has received irrevocable undertakings from these companies.

Nokia will push Symbian foundation as an alternative to Google’s Android (the launch is delayed)

The Symbian Foundation platform will be available to members under a royalty-free license from this non-profit foundation. The Symbian Foundation will provide, manage and unify the platform for its members. Also, it will commit to moving the platform to open source during the next two years, with the intent to use the Eclipse Public License.
The platform will be free and open to develop on from the start whether you are enthusiast, web designer, professional developer or service provider. To develop on the platform you will not need to be a member of the foundation. The Symbian Foundation’s developer program will provide a single point of access for developer support; providing a wide offering of tools and resources. [source]

yeah!, i was hoping this since from 9 months. Symbian is a defacto OS in Nokia Handset espicially 6600 which boosted thier sale and that handset was most as popular as 1100 now.

    2. Swaroop C H says:

Whoa. But will Sony Ericsson, Samsung and others continue to use Symbian?

    3. nokia insider says:

Nokia ?? Mafia ? No Way. Nokia is more of a Hedge fund …

they just purchased Troll Tech which is a linux app platform .. there Tablet is on linux
,few of their devices are on WM OS .

they have a navigator phone and they bought 2 location based social network . when you do everything and cover every base thats not a risk ..mafia takes risk . .google and iphone are mafia ..iphone is worst of mafia cause they are disguise as saints …

    4. Raseel says:

I think Nokia secretly (or not so secretly) wants to be a ubiquitous phenomenon. They are there in the WM, Linux as well as the Symbian space. That pretty much sums up the entire Embedded OS portfolio. No other company is even close.

    5. wow….but will other manufacturers keep using symbian or Nokia???

    6. Raseel says:

@Sonia : I don’t see why other manufacturers will not use it. Symbian is now not only backed by the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile handsets, they are also promoting it by opening the source.
If Nokia would not have open sourced it, other Manufacturers had a thing or two to worry about and even then , considering the large scale deployment of the OS and the cost of updating a completely new OS, there is very little they could have done.

    7. Mahesh says:

      @Raseel

Nokia will open source Symbian OS here is the News

    8. Ashish says:

yeah..that’s what I highlighted in the post as well

    9. Raseel says:

Thats what my point is too. Why would any Manufacturer feel threatened, since Nokia was opensourcing it anyways.

Personally Iphone is crazy right now, but google’s OS is going to be big as well. One thing I have seen happen with the iphone is it’s been rejected in Japan, they basically have more sophisticated phones. Would like to see those phones sold here.
