Kalyan Manyam, (founder of IndyaRocks), in our earlier podcast , hinted on IndyaRocks’ mobile and video aspirations; and am glad to see the first installment out of their factory.
Tomorrow IndyaRocks is announcing the launch of Widescreen videos – their video platform to upload and share video content.
What’s different about it?Why another video platform?
Apart from a few nice features (create your own playlist, play in popup), what really caught my attention is the speed. It’s damn fast and competes with the likes of Rediff’s iShare.
Also, one can upload the videos via mobile by sending the MMS to videos@indyarocks.com.
IndyaRocks has done a smart job of seed feeding the content with interesting videos. Infact, if you visit their videos section, you will atleast spend a good amount of time exploring the collection. Few videos I recommend are: Mahatma Gandhi, clips from Andaaz apna apna (on of my fav movies!), Bill Crystal @ 70th Oscars, the cool amex ad
IndyaRocks has launched a couple of cool mobile features too – Group SMS, Free SMS and M-blogging.
Give the video section a spin and do share your comments. I have a question for Kalyan – Aren’t these videos copyright protected (read the implication here)? What’s the direction do they want to go – a place for illegal copyrighted videos (like any other video site in India, and gain traction) or user generated videos?

Bandwidth issues and lack of access to good video cameras in India has ensured that we (Indian internet users) behave more like consumers than content generators. (more so incase of rich media).
We hope to see a change in the user behavior with the advent of video features in Mobile phones which can create cool videos anytime in a light weight format and upload them through various means.
We also plan to encourage UGC through a new feature that should be launched in September. The mobile and rich media features are in for exciting times ahead. So I request everyone to stay tuned.
I am sorry to say but i didn’t find this site much attractive when I compare with rediff ishare, youtube or other indian video websites.
You’ll have to work some more to stand apart. Your first work should be online, related to presentation, features & quality.
Just think how to make yourself different from other video website. Small differecens won’t give much influence.
The widescreen in good.
