Would you agree if I say apartments have created silos in our social lives?
Blame it on our busy schedule, but the truth is that apartments have become an unsocial place – residents hardly know each other, and the only interaction that happens is at the time of crisis (when water supply goes for a toss, when your maid servant doesn’t turn up etc).
Bangalore based startup, maxHeap is attempting to change all of this and is e-enabling the apartment complexes with CommonFloor.com, theirs newly launched portal.
Here is how it works:
- CommonFloor approaches the apartment president/authority and collects the apartment details.
- As a user, you will be provided an activation code (i.e. only the CF-enabled apartment residents can register)
- Once you are registered, you can create your profile/add hobbies/details etc
- As a non-admin user, you can post a notice, create user groups, events, QnA and interestingly, share & borrow books/magazines/CDs etc.
- Also, one can file complaints, search for local information (around the apartment), review housemaid/services and most importantly, get to know your neighbors well.
- As an admin, one can notify residents of events/updates via email/smses, approve/reject notices, upload bills etc.
As of now, CommonFloor has e-enabled ~50 apartments in Bangalore and is now aiming to go beyond the tier-1 apartments.
As far as concept is concerned, CommonFloor’s idea can be debated whether people actually want to make friends within the neighborhood or not; but one thing that CommonFloor needs to really attempt is to solve major pains of dwellers (for e.g. can they tie up with babajobs and create a pool of housekeepers?) and tie-up with apartment office (bribe them?) in order to enforce the usage.
What’s your take on CommonFloor? Will you use such service?

The product seems really innovative.
Certainly an out of box thinking of iitians is quite overt.
I think its really a cool product for people to again realize that they are social beings.
People should think of it as a forum to be in touch with each other continously and even do some Halla bol
aginst ills in the society.
A much awaited product. Lets see how does it go. All the best guys.
It’s a shameless copy paste of lifeat.com. So much so for innovation
Hey Ganesh. If you talk about innovation this way, I think every social network site including facebook is (shameless) copy paste of freindster or classmate or any other social network. So according to me rather than criticizing the indian products and startups this way, we should see the innovation and the hard work they are bringing to break the ice. Cheers.
Nice concept. Would love to use it myself – but the catch is that it would be effective only if a majority of the apartment dwellers signup to contribute. Whats missing is the incentive – e.g. if this were to turn into a one-stop portal for managing my cable, internet, phone, electricity needs (viewing, paying bills), service reminders for appliances in my house. Above all, it would be nice if this can bring transparency to the messy “coop housing society” affairs.
Gook Luck folks. Spot on so far.
Hi All. Thanks a lot for your nice
and some not so nice
comments about CommonFloor.
I would like to share my thoughts about CommonFloor with you. With CommonFloor we intend to solve the pain which we ourselves feel while we are living in one of the apartment complexes. Nobody can’t copy paste any idea just just because it has been successfully implemented in other markets. Asian community and Indian community in particular exhibits completely different behavior comparing with the western counterpart. There is a clear cut demand of a customized solution for these markets.
Thanks,
Sumit
In http://www.iBuyInGroup.com you buy items in group ( Simple Right ?) .Yes the more you buy ,the more you “all” get discounts and better deal .The deal goes better and better as number of buyers increases.
Sellers Post offers and Buyers can join those offers .As the number of interested buyers increases the price drops. When the offer is closed , Sellers will reach to all buyers over phone or email . All buyers are requested to go at sellers shop/store and the deal is executed.
It is very simple . Try it now and enjoy the benefits.
