Alabot: Intelligent bot for your ‘information hungry’ soul

January 30, 2008
By sinha

alabotAlabot is a Pune based startup that has built an Interactive Intelligent Agent (i.e. bot) based on NLP (Natural Language Processing) and AI (artificial intelligence).

Leaving all the tech jingles aside and simplistically put, Alabot has built software that will analyze, understand, and interpret languages that humans use naturally, so that eventually you will be able to address your application as though you were addressing another person (i.e. in a typical syntax-free discussion format).

You can try out a working example by

  • adding alabot.travel@gmail.com to your GTalk account.
  • and then ask questions like “flight from bangalore to mumbai on 10th feb for 4 adults 1 kid”..(or what’er travel query you want to punch)
  • The bot will interpret the query and will suggest answers.

Alabot is platform agnostic and is compatible with any IM as well as email/sms or web client and can potentially “talk enable” any application.

Alabot uses NLP as the core platform and has built layers of human-like direct conversation. Opportunities for alabot are huge – it can directly compete with live chat clients (like liveperson) which are mainly used by ecommerce sites to answer real time queries from visitors, or partner with sms search services for interactive queries; or even enable voice search (how about Ubona+alabot combination?)

alabot

Alabot is indeed an interesting startup to watch out for. Give alabot a spin and share your comments. Are they rightly timed for the Indian market?

By the way, you can also have fun with the bot by asking questions like “what is India”, “who is <your name>”, “go F@#%…”

Alabot recently partnered with mobile-worx to launch intelligent sms search which will enable users to search for mobile content, local business directories, local deals, train / flight tickets, hotel deals and movie tickets for major cities in India.

On a lighter note, Alabot reminds me of the Rahul Bose starrer, Ctrl Alt Del (watch the pirated copy), where loner Rahul Bose who is frustrated of life and is planning to commit suicide, ends up falling in love with a call center girl (or her voice?), who later turned out to be a bot..oh well, the alabot!

  • Take a look at the various Google Bots bots provided by askme.im

You can get bots for live cricket scores (instacricket@askme.im), daily horoscopes (astro@askme.im), foreign currency converter (fx@askme.im). Just add these to your Gmail Chat or Gtalk.

Try out cleartrip.trains@gmail.com for train searches. It is, however, not an AI bot and does have very limited query understanding features
  • Im sure thier is a better way round this bot , I have had the same issue has it been sorted out yet?

<!-- @page { size: 21cm 29.7cm; margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } --> Hi Sangfriod.......As name and the status of bot(Travel Domain Demo) might suggest that is a DEMO bot for demo purposes , but some of the user might get confused and may believe the data is from live feed rather a dummy data for Demo , Thanks for pointing this out . We have added note on bot status message and welcome message so that users are not confused (Pl Note This is a demo program for the purpose of testing our algorithm, results are NOT based from live feed, but from dummy data ). we are not competing with make my trip and are not content aggregators we are a AI / NLP platform / middle ware which can applied to any domain like health , e-com, education , travel, finance etc etc
    Cheers,Gp
  • hmm ... where does accuracy feature in this offering? I guess it has been ignored altogether. Please see below:-

Sangfroid: bangalore delhi 01/04/2008 1 adult
    alabot.travel: Please wait a moment while I do a search .... ....
    For the 01 of 04 from bangalore to delhi I suggest the following - Jet Airways Rs 7800 ( Departure 7am , Arrival 10 am ), Sahara Rs 7800 ( Departure 9pm to Arrival 10:30 am )
Thanks for talking to me , we appreciate your business

And here is what, makemytrip has to tell:-

    Review Flight Details
Airline     FareType     Departure     Arrival     Stops      Duration
    Jet Lite            Bangalore     New Delhi
                    Tue, 01 Apr    Tue, 01 Apr    NonStop   2h 40m
                    7:30 AM        10:10 AM

    Review Fare Details
Traveler Type     Quantity     Base Fare     Taxes & Fees     Total (including taxes)
    Adult        1             Rs. 975(1X975)     Rs. 2051     Rs. 3026

    Total:    Rs. 3026
    Grand Total Rs.  3,026

why would I want to even talk to this bot again ? Apart from when I have seriously nothing worthwhile to do ... i mean the asking of questions like --- “what is India”, “who is <your name>”, “go F@#%…” :-)

Thanks Ashish for your post - much appreciated , just a quick foot note - the demo is only for the travel domain just now -  there are some user cases on our blog (http://blog.alabot.com/test-me-on-gtalk/)

Mahesh thank you too for your positive feedback and your ideas - i totally agree with you on the usability and scope of Ala - infact we would be happy to share our platform with content providers / universities / health care givers etc to embed this technology and Talk Enable their  data in all verticals (not just travel!!!)

    cheers

  • This is insanely great IDEA. I liked it very much.

    Ubona+Alabot is deadly combination.

I think if Alabot is generalized beyond just travell, like the way we ask others for suggestion/advise about our concern, it will be a great tool.

Generalized sectors: Health, Finance, Education, Food/Grocery ordering, Books and others.

Now health is lucrative sector, build DB of high-quality Health information for answering will be a use full for all. As we encounter frequent health disorder and waste 100's of money for Doctors just for consultant, in this place if alabot did the job of doctors, it will be our virtual FREE doctor.

Alabot IDEA has lot of potential to explore to show its full strength. Its should also study the behavior of each individual who is chating with it, so that next time if i ask question it shd capture what i am looking for immediately.

    Good luck guys, Great Product.
