Future Group and Kishore Biyani: Marching Ahead.

Kishore Biyani is a model businessman at least for me. He is sowing seeds into a lot of interesting businesses and when the time comes, he would reap rich rewards. He is displaying the true spirits of entrepreneurship. In the process of building his companies, he is helping his customers realize his dreams. His way of creating a company is dreaming big, getting the right people on the board and backing all efforts with solid research and relying on intuition and insight.

Lessons to be learnt? Get the right people on the team, let them take risks, invest in the future and try to empower your customers.

Today in Economics Times article, he made clear his thoughts when he said,

…we want to create a strong sectoral play to capture the transition from a savings-led economy to a consumption-led economy.

Now this small piece of comment has a lot to say about Mr. Biyani and his thought process. He has identified, at the right time, that Indians are changing the way they live. There was a time when they were saving more than 50% of their earnings and living on basis necessities. Now slowly and gradually they are living lavishly and often spending the entire monthly earnings before a month is over. They are now more confident about opportunities and their economic well being.

Future Group today has a very strong presence in retail (with Big Bazaar, Depot, Pantaloons, ezone etc.), online retail (futurebazaar.com), advertising and media (Future TV, Future Media etc.), Financial services (Future Generalli, Future Money), Entertainment (holdings in Inox, failed plans of getting into Dish TV, Galaxy Entertainment etc), Customer services (Mr. Right). They are on the track of getting the largest pie of an individual’s spending.

Imagine yourself spending a day out. A typical day out would be a leisurely brunch a good restaurant, a movie at a plush theatre, shopping at a mall and finally a late night movie or a drink. You will encounter following services – transport, public places, restaurants, retailers, media and your house. Future group has its presence everywhere except transport. Wondering if they are planning something on that too .. ?

Apart from a holiday, your typical day would start with breakfast cereal or fruits (brought from Big Bazaar), clothes for office (from Pantaloons), Laptops and electronics equipment (from ezone), office or home furnishing (again from Pantaloons or Big Bazaar), books and stationary (from depot), probably a coffee (at Coffee World), bill payments (from Mr. Right), evening at Sports Bar Express or The Bowling Company and finally a TV (bought from ezone) in your bedroom (done by The Home Store).

Future Group companies touch a customer more than 18 hour a day. And more often than not they get value for money. With Indian customers ready to spend more and more with times to come and demanding value for every single rupee they spend, I can easily see Future Group leading the new India.

And by the way, look out for BCCL (NO, not the cricket board but the Times of India group) and TV18 group also in times to come.

I bought a Jamo subwoofer from e-zone Pune at Pimpri. First the supplied Subwoofer was faulty and it went back. Second I could not get the replacement for 15 days, third when insisted for refund the repaired item was supplied to me , when I recognised then e-zome commited to replace it in next one week. Fourth this has passed about one and a half month and no replacement has arrived.

Sixth, on requesting again and again and visiting multiple times they are not giving me the Invoice of the item I purchased, I doubt if they really cheating with Sales tax department.

    PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM E-ZONE.

This kinda scares me. What kind of country are we developing into? Too much power and control in the hand of too few? Just like you talked about Future group, one can also imagine a day with Reliance. Comeon big guys…even shoe stores and little corner coffee shops! Kuch to chhod do yaar. Why do our Indian companies concentrate only on horizontal expansion?

We can clearly see the retail wind blowing into India.
Clearly with organisations like the “FUTURE GROUP” around they seemingly will not start the return journey soon.
He has redifined entrepreneurship the KISHORE BIYANI way
who needs a “STALLMART” when we have a MEGAMART

With all due respect to Rohit
I beg to differ with his opinion
if there is an opportunity in a particular field no
ambitious group will sit back and relax
no one invites u to make profit,if there is some then u should jump and earn it
i would not call this horizontal expansion
    this is rather “going global”
and it is the shopkeepers job to sell
whether or not to spend is the customer’s question.
