What Globalization? Indian Govt. wants Google/Yahoo/Microsoft to Host Indian Email accounts ending with .in, servers in India
Globalization is a state of mind – and if you are an Indian with ‘global’ email id (i.e. the ones not ending with .in), you might expect certain changes owing to the recent amendments to the IT Act.
The amendments passed by Parliament require internet behemoths like Google, Rediff and Microsoft — which provide free email services — to set up Indian servers. Not just that, they may also have to provide Indian email accounts for Indian nationals.
Internet users will have email accounts ending with ‘.in’ instead of ‘.com’ – ToI
While this is repercussion of the Mumbai terror attack (terrorists used BlackBerry mobiles and Blackberry refused to part with information critical to the investigation), changing the domain names does not make sense at all.
Infact, many of these companies tend to transfer email accounts (i.e. data) to respective geographical servers – to serve users better (and faster).
Earlier, Indian government asked govt, officials to avoid using Yahoo/Gmail and Hotmail and even banned social networking sites/picture sharing sites for Indian diplomats.
Very recently, I met a state governor and asked him on email id he checks frequently, and his reply states the infrastructure of government’s nic.in platform – he was using Yahoo email id for all purpose, though he had the official nic.in id – which was so damn slow and unreliable that he used to check it once in few months (and had even directed all important emails to be sent to his internet id).
Government cannot kill globalization just because there are security threats – they need to upgrade their own infrastructure to combat such threats (it took them almost 6 months to crack Blackberry).
What’s your opinion?

You are confusing and misleading.
These enforcements are no way related to globalization.
1. Data Protection.
Do you think India is the only country enforced this? No. European Union prohibits transfer of personal data to non-European countries with out European “adequacy” standard for privacy protection.
By your argument European Union is also killing globalization.
India is having every rights to force anybody adhere by its standard(Though I doubt government has visionaries to establish a standard)
2. NIC infrastructure.
Yes, I agree they need to improve it. These are the places where critical information may leak.
But that doesn’t prevent India from enforcing privacy & data protection for citizens.
3. Cracking blackberry.
RIM doesn’t want to compromise security on their service. But government wanted to monitor the data for security concerns. At last resort they cracked blackberry. I am happy they are able to do that. There is nothing wrong with, government should have ultimate say.
Do anything relate this to globalization? No.
We talk about data security and privacy, since we something about. There are lot many people who don’t what happens with personal data. It is governments jobs to do this for them.
“India is having every rights to force anybody adhere by its standard” – And you make China out of India.
?WHat makes you believe that changing the domain name will help the govt? Can’t terrorists login to their .com account and do the same?
Domain isn’t that matter. I don’t advocate doing that. May be because of not so wise people creating standards/compliance. But If data centers are kept in India, helps in forensic research.
Talking about globalization – we are creating an entry barrier for other global services to come to India. What if govt. asks Twitter to restrict twitter ids from India (and share data?) ? Or start Facebook to share indian user data? Where do you draw the line?
?These are related to globalization – in all aspect of the word ‘Global’. We cant stay in silo with archaic technology.
Shhh.. Don’t give them more ideas !
When information required for government, it should be in a position to access. Their should be a way for government to get it. In the case of Blackberry, RIM was in denial mode.
Of course that has to be fairly used.
Right. And that means having a defined treaty with govt. and companies HQed in those countries (asking them to move everything to India and even a .in domain speaks of tech awareness of our bureaucrats).
?Arun – I am wondering how does google.in will help indian govt. to cope up with terrorism?
“European Union prohibits transfer of personal data to non-European countries with out European “adequacy” standard for privacy protection.” – and that’s why innovation happens outside Europe. (no direct impact, but this is how economics works)
We will create a reverse route/anti-globalization if we even try doing this.
Well, the .in domain registrar (NIXI) works under Indian government. They may probably use it to ensure that .in domains are hosted in India thus making it possible to issue cease-and-desist orders and share users info of any kind.
In theory, that is. Even if it helps stop terrorism, I’m more concerned about the loss of privacy for law-abiding citizens. The government will start acting like a terrorist in the name of protecting you against terrorists. A scenario from “1984″ is not that far fetched.
Not sure if what govt wants to do is really do-able. But if it is and finally materializes, there may be a one time business opportunity for some (indian data center companies will have to grow as lots of data will have to be moved and hosted!).
What does this new act mean?
Does it mean that as a citizen of India, I can’t open any email accounts which don’t end with “.in” or don’t have their servers in India?
WHERE IS INDIAN HEART, IN THE INDIAN MAP OR HUMAN HEART???? DILLI OR CALCUKKA
WHAT IS THE NEXT NAME ::: BHARAT ::: THE GOLDEN BIRD ::: HINDU ::: HINDUSTAN::: INDIA ::: ??????????
I guess ,Some where they have read china has more population then india but crime rate is less then india.
They things this is the way they can control the crime rates. or illegal activates, But have they gave a second thought. if google is not there then what will be the problem, We will not get instant solution.
That means we will not get the solution of problem faster then other. IT is biggest thing to improve india.
this is the field indian are known for. once govt put barer on this. They are putting barer on growth.
well we cannot say them , they only see once face of coin. So we have to be ready to go back to 1990′s.
