Online Shopping in India: eBay India sells one product a min
Indians are shopping online and as per eBay India’s latest numbers – eBay India is selling one product every minute.
Hot selling products are not the most obvious ones – i.e. software/computer related etc, but it’s jewelery!
It is jewelery that is the most sought and a piece of it is sold every 7 minutes on eBay India (other popular categories are Coins or currency notes, mobile handsets, stamps, books, music players and watches).
On an average day, a piece of jewellery is sold every 7 minutes, a coin or note sells every 16 minutes, a stamp sells every 19 minutes, an apparel sells every 22 minutes and a book is sold every 27 minutes. [ET]
Interesting stats. While the numbers don’t hold any significant meaning (reminds me of GNIIT ad that says one guy is placed every 11 minutes – basically you take the number of items that are sold, average out and create a PR!) – what’s really interesting is the fact that jewelery is the most sold item.
Let’s take a quick look at eBay India traffic:

eBay India Traffic (Comscore)
- 15-24 age group: 38.3%
- 25-34: 29%
- 35-44: 17%
- 45-54: 14.3%
As per eBay’s transaction data, men in the age-group of 25-30 years account for 70-75 per cent of the shoppers.
Do you buy things online (i.e. apart from air/train tickets)?
Very recently, AliBaba launched India portal and eBay faced boycott from sellers
Report: Online Diwali sales – electronic items accounted for 45% of the sales

The actual reality is that eBay is at a losing end with their Indian Site. Compare one 1 item per minute vs. thousands per minute sold on their US, UK and other sites. Compare one item per minute online vs. thousands sold on the street shops thru out India.
While there is a lot of “scope” to gain from a different perspective, the reality is that eBay is not able to make a dent into the Indian market with all their mighty marketing. This is after shelling out $50 million for Baazi.com to get into Indian sector about 4 years back. I feel this is rather a very poor showing on eBay India rather a positive.
[...] As Ashish Sinha of pluGGed.in noted yesterday [...]
Do u guys know how the consumers pay for these products ??. With so many payment options available, is there any statistics that u have on the preferred mode of payment and the split up of the same based on the age profile of the consumer.
It would also be interesting to see what is the average value of jewellery sold on ebay. Online shopping of jewellery is primarily restricted to brands selling low end products. If one were to look at the listings of products on ebay, suratdiamond.com or johareez.com . It not tough to conclude its mostly products worth a couple of thousand rupees.
Its a given, that people would like to try out more expensive jewellery before making a purchase.
[...] However, when we look at the profile of shoppers on eBay, 70-75 percent belongs to men between age group of 25-30 years. Read more. [...]
Hi. I am new to ebay and online shopping. I am also new to computers and need occasional guidance. I am an Artist doing oil/acrylic paintings on canvas. i need to know how to display/market my paintings.
I live in INDIA, near New Delhi , in a city called NOIDA
I am planning to start a gallery in Kerala. Will you be able to send paintings (unframed) from Delhi? Can you send a scanned image, if one is available?
This is really great news for Indians. Now days Indian people are turning to affordable & quality online product shopping.
