Even though Facebook is kicking every other socionet’s butt worldwide, things are very different in India. Orkut’s traffic is way above Facebook and any homegrown socionet.

I guess, many of the advanced users are moving on to Facebook and while the change will take it’s own sweet time to cascade across other user segments, Orkut surely will face the heat in the coming months.

A lot of Indians are not even there on Social Networks.. And even if they join one, I guess Orkut is the first preference, as most of their friends are already there on Orkut..

Me and my all 150+ friends have left orkut and have shifted to f/b since Jan 2010. And now we rarely check orkut for any updates.F/b is cool

Surprised to see orkut becoming prominent frm May 08. Cud it be orkut.com vs orkut.co.in issue? I joined orkut in Mar 06. By May 07, the usage had reached its peak. Since then my friends list have more or less been in the constant range of 610-630. Joined Facebook in May 07 and friend count nearing 350 now.
Is there any data abt what ppl do either site? Orkut took time to introduce friend updates and apps, so ppl who logged onto orkut prior May 07 had gotten used to not doing much on it. Different scenario on facebook, though.
Oh yeah..I forgot to mention that in the post. Orkut did the IP redirect..so I took only Orkut.co.in’s data (for the later half of the year)
I don’t think orkut will pass on its lead to facebook anytime soon in India.Connecting all friends on socionet is time taking process and many have well established network and activity streams on orkut.

sorta makes sense – people go where their friends are….the more adventurous among them try new social spheres but unless they can build connections with people online, they soon give up. at the end of the day, it’s all about people power – on and offline.
Now when its discussed about what people (mostly young generation) preffer in India as a place online to fulfill their social networking needs, the very first name is Orkut the reasons are simple and factful
1. Till this date most of my and other’s friends are already on Orkut.
2. Beleive it but many of our friends are scared of putting their names on Internet as they don’t know how this works but when they beleive by visiting other’s orkut they are satisfied by the fact that’s its not that much reveling and are happy to understand orkut because of its made for nerd interface unlike facebook.
3. Many of my friends even doesn’t know that there are more this type of sites or they don’t care.
4. They are already well settled online why should they move.
5. They have no proffesional needs so why would they will need a more complicated interface.
Moreover the site Orkut belongs to Google which does have a Branch in India and which cares about what are events and reasons to make orkut more friendly with regional features and applications.
Facebook IS advanced but has way to go to attract Indians.
I believe there is an extremely simple logic that FaceBook managed to win over all the other socionets, which also holds true(to quite an extent) for GMail winning a larger piece of the cake over Yahoo and the others – its the way the conversation is threaded.
FaceBook, since the very beginning, threads a particular post with comments left by your friends, hence, its more focused on the talk going on rather than the user – thats the way we talk in real life. Orkut, on the other hand, added the “Conversation” button very late, while also forgetting that a person finds it tedious to click on a button to find out where the connect happens. Gmail, I believe, scored brownie points on the same logic.
I wont say that there can be no improvements to the FaceBook interface, primarily because I think I know one of the major improvements that can take place and I am currently testing it out. I believe in this case that FaceBook hasnt given the complete control to its users, thats what I am trying to do – On BugVine, its possible to record a message or type it out, also, you neednt comment back on a post only by typing out your reply, you can record a message back. I’m slowly slowly adding more features and things to do while even improving the interface. Facebook users are fans of the likes of Russel Peters, while Orkut users are fans of the likes of Raju Srivastav, nothing else…

Now Facebook has thrown orkut in gutter in India. All my friends and other people i heard left orkut and started facebook. Facebook has become more attractive and now attracting more and more Indians. I think Google should learn something from Facebook and now the owner of Facebook is the world's RICHEST man. He also left Bill Gates away. Now you can imagine that how many people use Facebook rather than Windows where Facebook is a free social networking site and we have to buy Windows(forget about piracy).

Things are changing now. 2yrs back orkut was way ahead of Facebook, but now its 60:40. Indian orkut users are using more of Facebook, cause it looks more professional, orkut looks unfinished.

Hi everyone, whats happening is that some stupid indian people have joined facebook thinking that its more popular and more in fashion. But facebook is not At all user friendly. It keeps showing unwanted messages, like some friend has sent you an gift, do you want to take revenge from you blah blah friend. They are all unwanted. So its like having a car with three wheels(which maybe is in fashion), but you can hardly drive it. So a simple car with four wheels is better than what everybody is running after.
Exactly,I feel being a software developer myself,FaceBook is not user friendly.On the contrary,Orkut is easy to use and has a great interface.Though the latest avatar of Orkut is worse than FaceBook but I prefer the classic looks of old Orkut.

Most of the Indians including me started their social networking with orkut only but end up using facebook. Most people feel like ignorant initially using facebook but the moment they get aware of the powerful features which facebook proved over orkut, they gardually switch over to facebook only. Another reason why facebook also a success in India coz of its Paid Advertisement . its better then Google adsence as the audience targeting is more specific than Google.. & there is no paid ad system in orkut.. so, it loose interest on business houses..
i the area of online gaming facebook is more constant then orkut.. some 2-3 year back orkut had started a new application where user can buy & sell IPL cricketer as shares bond etc etc upon their performance ” i forgot the application name” .. & that time it was a hit ,but due to some unknown reason the application closed. personally i was unhappy with orkut for this step..but, in facebook & zyanga’s online games they are been attached so long time.. that why people are using facebook for games only..
in the field of Social Networking concept also facebook looks more professional than orkut.. the comments , feeds , vedio are very much organized…
