Spam emails and viruses : India leads the way.

India leads the spam industry worldwide and 1 out of every 30 emails in India contains a virus!

Stats from other countries:

  • China: 1:92.7 emails.
  • US: 1:191.5 emails
  • NZ: 1 in 768 emails.

The global ratio of spam mail was 73.4 per cent, which means one in every 1.36 email was affected.

India’s spammy lead doesn’t end here. As per Information & Technology minister, 76% of emails originating from India are spams!

This surely shows the state of web security in India and a strong opportunity for players like Google/Zoho to spread their wings into Indian small businesses (Google acquired message security services Postini, in 2007 and is integrating that with their Google apps product suite).

Interestingly, Bill Gates is the most spammed person in the world (receives 4 million spams a year!).

    1. Well, the virus problem is almost non-existent for us Ubuntu users. :-) And Gmail handles spam really well. I am in the process of shifting over all my email accounts to gmail (POP/IMAP).

Over the years I have become very careful about revealing email address over Internet and this has served me well. But the spam/virus problems will prevail as long as we keep thinking that security is a technology issue and not a matter of user education and awareness.
