Reliance to launch online maps, BigMaps?

May 20, 2008

After BigAdda and BigFlicks comes Reliance’s next venture – BIGMaps.

The site is not yet up, but a look at whois.org gets you the following results:

Reliance Big Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., Manav Sethi (linkedin profile), +91.9323145122, Fax: +91.2230385599, Reliance Centre, Ballard Estate,19, Walchand Hirachand Marg
MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA, 400001,IN’

Given that there are tons of other services, from Y! and G, it would be interesting to see what differentiator can BIGMaps bring in?

I would like to believe that Reliance will leverage it’s strong understanding and presence in the local market.

Instead of taking the regular data partnership route, they can use their muscle + deep pockets to hire hundreds of people, load them with GPS devices and geocode the Indian cities.

Only if, they don’t walk @ ‘chintee‘ speed!

What’s your take?

Bigmaps is a BIG DUD. My friends from CSE IIT who got an offer to work there told me it was managed by a pathetic COO. They don’t even have their basics right. All they are working on is a simple web application to serve maps and it has already taken them 2 years and counting.
Reliance must fire its managers for most of them are way worse off than ignorant fools.
They splurge Reliance funds to attend international web conferences but you can’t expect idiots to learn anything. When leaders without brain run a team, Its the butt kissers who make merry. I don’t see any reason a talented person would work for such a team.

Any Business or Entreprise cant be build overnight. You cant expect for start ups or any new entry verticals churning Millions in months. Anything needs time and patience. Maximum time limit is 10 years. But with stringent plans you can build a company within 5 yrs max. Take any case scenario- Infosys, Wipro or even Reliance to have grown over the years. So dont think like a Kid.

One thing reliance is good at is throwing money – Don’t underestimate them, they might come up with something good after learning from their mistakes and of course millions in the drain.

After using most of Reliance products and services, one thing you learn is that they are anything but reliable.

Lolz..Even I heard about this bigmaps team where the CEO thinks graphics and html are the toughest jobs and pays them more than developers. Just because he can see their work :)
The result is everybody except UI team never stay more than few months.

God save people working under such pointy haired boss.
