OneIndia has launched OneBookmarks, the first regional language bookmarking service in India.
“Our aim is to bridge the gap between growing number of Tier-II or Regional Internet users and the surging amount of localized content available on the Internet,” said Sriram Hebbar, COO, Greynium Information Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (the co. behind OneIndia)
According to a recent study by JuxtConsult, 41% of urban Internet users in India (30 million) prefer reading content in local language. While the DoT is aiming to connect 1,00,000 villages through broadband by 2010, .IN domain registrations have already reached the 2,00,000 mark. These figures signify that there will be immense demand for content in local language and more such regional content is going to be developed in the days to come.
“While some of the Search Engines are introducing localized search facilities, creating a common area for storing searched local content was imperative,” said Sriram.
OneBookmarks currently supports Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malyalam.
The unique feature of OneBookmarks is that, the users can save URL’s and add description or tags in either English or Regional [Unicode] text using phonetic or inscript language keyboard method.
I believe, services like these are going to be the next wave in the Indian Internet Industry. Infact, in my earlier post on Desi Diggs, I too mentioned the need for vernacular content services and OneBookmarks is definitely headed in the right direction.
Infact, don’t you think that even the desi social nets should add local language support? Most of my Orkut scraps are in Hindi (but written in English). What do you think?

bookmarking sites will actually help to “brand” you as long as you select your niche properly and start building keywords and tags from there. But I believe that social bookmarking is a process you just cannot skip if you want your business to actually start flying, also using a great automatic bookmarking software is definitely the most powerful and cost effective way to do it.
Anyone could use social bookmarks as a part of online marketing strategy because it is a advantageous way to grow the exposure of your business. But having a automatic bookmarking tool is crucial, because this way you will save an average of 3-4 hours a day, or perhaps an average of $200/month in bookmarking services while you generate the greatest results in terms of traffic and Page Rank boost.
