Indian Railways to Provide Internet Services in Kerala, Free Educational Material from IITs and IISC

When it comes to innovation, Indian Railways does have an interesting lead over the other government departments. The Railways is planning to provide broadband Internet connection in Kerala through the Railtel Corporation of India Ltd.
Railtel would provide the service through cable operators who have connectivity across the state and is expected to get operational in another 2-3 months.

Our network is such that every railway station in the country can be turned into a source for education centres. But we have decided to provide broadband connectivity to the people through cable operators. The biggest advantage for those using our connectivity is that they would get unlimited download in matters regarding education [source]

Users can download education material for free, which is aggregated from the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Railtel claims that the downloading of education material will be at a speed ranging from 2 mpbs to 30 mpbs! Railtel has a vast OFC (Optical Fibre Cable) network capable of providing bandwidth services at a large number of towns and cities across the country (38,000 Km)

Interesting – isn’t it?

very very interesting…yeh hui na baat :) Would be a great idea to have a learning center at every station. On a lighter note imagine young students sitting there, learning and then taking the “train” to move to a bigger city…

Railtel already offers broadband services in Whitefield, Bangalore, at half the price of the rest of the providers, thinking about switching.

    5. Very good move. This will boost the internet usage in kerala

    6. Ashitha Juhy says:

why not provide better download rates to home users at cheap rates. in most of the countries internet is free of cost. why should we pay ??? or its high time that we moved to satellite network’s directly. anyways, many will miss the train….
