InfoEdge, the company behind Naukri, Quadrangle, 99acres, jeevansathi is all set to launch their education portal, Shiksha in next 2-3 weeks.
Shiksha would offer information about educational institutes in the country as well as overseas..”The portal will have the entire gamut of information on education, ranging from the name of a college, the courses offered, course content to the fee structure.”
Oberoi said instead of targeting the entire education market which is very huge, it would focus on advertisement which is a great source of revenue.[source]
I am quite bullish about the education market and it’s high time we have a portal that provides the necessary info about colleges, courses they offer and most importantly, the quality of education imparted (and I am not sure whether Shiksha will cover that).
What sort of feature would you like to see in Shiksha?
Interesting comment by Prashant,:
I am wondering how Shiksha is different from studyplaces.com [ Naukri has some stake in that company] . and lately i am feeling that there is too much of action here in that space . Apart from studyplaces.com, shiksha.com there is learn hub [from Educomp], there is a unconfirmed rumor that tutorvista is doing something in this space. this is in addition to a dedicated TV Channel [Topper TV) and a dozen print publications ( JSR,CSR,Education Times) and Professional carrier Counselors.
Is there really a BIG enough market for carrier guidance when Indian are basically very conservative when it comes to making carrier choice . everyone wants to do IITK with Specialization in Comp Sc. do they expect students in tier B town to go to cyber caffe and spend 20-40Rs per hour to study??
I doubt if they will .

Yes, a lot of action is happening in this space and that is because the opportunity is too big. More than 80k students fly to US, around 54k to Australia and I dont have the numbers for Europe. Studyplaces is focusing on students going abroad from India, while Shksha is focused on students within India applying to Indian colleges. The level of awareness is that everyone wants to do IITK with specialization in Comp Sc. – however, the kind of money which is pouring into education in India is amazing. There around 2k colleges with AICTE approval as of today, however more than 1200 applications are pending with the AICTE. So where are all these colleges going to advertise on?
That is the opportunity which Shiksha wants to tap. However, going by the earnings call announcement in January from Infoedge, I believe Shiksha would go beyond just being a lead generator. I would not be surprised if, Infoedge intends to integrate Shiksha with Naukri – that is what my company believes in.
what i feel is that there are lots of website coming with such intiative but what they should concentrate is on content . i have found a very pretty portal http://www.trajectory.in . they are focussing on content together with services . and with bunch of iitians behind this ..i expect it grow more with services
I feel Shiksha is nowhere near to Freshersworld.com in terms of its publicity among job seeking freshers
I think for study abroad related information and also applying to US, Canada and UK universities http://learnhub.com is the best resource. Its comprehensive and it also gives scholarship of USD 2000 to Indian students applying abroad. you can check here: Study Abroad Platform
