@Kallol: IVCA does have data but it does not put it for free public view. VCs in India do make money otherwise they would have been out of business (same as any other business)! I recently heard about Accel Partner's 24 successful investments out of 26 (which is awesome!). Even if 30% of companies are successful, VCs make a lot of money.
Who says entrepreneurs do not want to make money?
@Mahesh: They have to bear the losses as it is equity. High risk, high return!

Good article. Really Informative.
My doubt is, everbody always talk about the gains of a VC. What if VC invest in a business and the business goes bankrupt. In such scenarios, does VC recover all the money from the Entreprenuer with the interest or they have to bear the losses.

Excellent article!

Now every entrepreneur can know why VC's dont care a damn about his passion, drive, hard-work and all that.

They treat you EXACTLY like you treat a bank. If Bank A gives more interest on your money instead of Bank B, you would go there, wont you? Would you care about service, the Chairmans dedication, the brand image or any of that sort of stuff?

In the same way it is money, honey for the VC. All the long-winded explanation apart, in the end, the VC is ONLY interested in the money he can make from you.

Entrepreneurs are willing to take risks, have passion, most struggle and save and work hard and live their dreams!

Yes, they ALSO make money, but unlike a VC, that is not their PRIMARY aim! At least not always!

Hi Pavan
Data on VC returns is hard to come by in India - unlike the NVCA in the US, i guess the IVCA does not publish anything. Can you let us know what sort of returns Indian VCs have made - take a fund that has run its full course ? Take Westbridge/Sequoia for example or take a fund that is web 1.0 era, eg, Indocean Chase or GTV or Walden or Antfactory, etc.

Given that VCs in India speak so much about making returns, etc, just wanted to know how much they really make ?

I personally feel that because of this mindset, VCs in India can not actually think out of the box and actually end up make very poor returns (i wonder if they exist at all !). Pls correct me if i am wrong.
