Nice article Shalin - some really good examples here. With your blog post and David Skok's blog post on business models - http://www.forentrepreneurs.com/business-models/ - I know have a pretty good idea of what I think is the best way to go to market with my new product. Thanks again!

Shalin,

This is very good summary of the various pricing models. I am surprised though that you didn't mention big players in Cloud Hosting like Google AppEngine, Salesforce/VMWare and Microsoft's Windows Azure, which have different pricing models.

I work in Windows Azure and we have two pricing models - one is consumption based or pay-as-you-go (similar to the Amazon one), and a discounted one for customers who want to commit to certain usage per month at a lower price.

The important point in your article though is that people should be aware what options they have before they click on the Buy button. Good job!

Thanks for this comprehensive guide - it's useful to see all the options out there gathered together. We're very interested in SaaS applications and I've written a blog about them, though more for businesses looking to use them rather than create them: http://blog.bitzesty.com/saas-opening-up-new-opportunities-for-busines

In the Indian context, how often you want to bill for a Paid SaaS application is also a question of how much pain you can withstand when trying to raise an invoice with an Indian company and try to collect. Speaking from personal experience, even with the largest companies in India, you don't want this pain every month. They have a single person to deal with when it comes to their own invoices you need to pay but when you have an invoice they need to pay, they intentinally create a hurdles course - business user approval, finance approval, Mumbai office SAP system approval, wiring guy's attention, etc. They have made it a veritable Accounts Payable delaying tactics science. Last five days in any quarter, first five days in any quarter no payments, as if all accounting is done with fingers in the hand so that you have enough time to total up all the numbers in your financial statements every quarter!

Every quarter may be ideal when it comes to Business applications or even Consumer applications. Monthly may be too much of a pain unless it is based on Credit Cards and automatic approval.

Thanks for the article, I've been struggling with the same questions. I ended up going with a free trial and a monthly subscription.

WRT payment frequency, I've seen several articles where people say they were forced into a monthly payment through their payment provider. Basecamp apparently started out as a yearly subscription, but was changed to monthly at the request of the payment processor.

Shalin - thank you for the mention. Regarding billing systems, merchants need to be very careful when storing their customers credit card data with a provider because most will hold it hostage if they ever want to move to a different provider. It's a huge gotcha with big implications.

To address this problem, we recently created the Credit Card Data Portability Standard. You can read more about it here: http://www.braintreepaymentsolutions.com/blog/data-portability

Pricing is of-course a rocket science if you really look deeply into it.

Why would the price be 10.95/month and not 11/month or 9.99/month?
Here is a simple article explaining how pricing is a big mind-game.
