How to Create an Online Identity for Your Startup

One of the biggest challenges that startups face is undoubtedly – exposure. As a startup, you may offer great products and services but, unless people are aware of your offerings, it’s hard to gain any amount of business. Building a well rounded online identity can take your business to great lengths.

While most Indian startups (even corporations for that matter) offer great products and services, their online identities are downright dull when compared to the west. In this post, I’ll guide you through some tools that you might want to consider using to gain exposure on the web.

Website

First and foremost, invest in a great website. A well built website goes a long way in communicating your company’s focus on quality. Research your competitors’ websites to understand how they’re marketing similar services. Your website must contain the following:

  • A home page that contains your company’s logo, slogan and your offerings in a simple but, effective way. Consider this as your elevator pitch for potential clients to invest in your products. Think of creative headings and also place customer reviews if possible. Users love social proof. Include links to all your social media. Get to the point. Most users are impatient. You’ve got to tell them what you’re offering in less than two lines.
  • A well laid out menu.
  • Products & Services Page – Here’s where you can include your product descriptions, demos and pricing. Be honest with your services. If you’re a startup ERP developer, you don’t want to tell your visitors that you’ve already sold to thousands of customers. Visitors love honesty. If your product is great, they’ll buy it even if it’s new.
  • About Page – Include details about your company here along with your mission statement, prior work experience and team.
  • Contact Page – Give your users as many ways to contact you as you can. Phone numbers, email addresses, office address, Twitter etc. Include a contact form.
  • Search – A search box is very essential. Your users can find the information they need without having to browse through menus.

If possible, include a blog with latest news and developments about your company. Visitors love to hear what’s going on. This also gives an impression that your company is actually working on something and is interested to communicate this with users. Blogs are a great source of traffic. Your posts must be balanced. Maintain a certain level of professionalism while also being casual.

Contact a web development firm or a freelancer at networks such as RentACoder or oDesk. Clearly convey your website requirements. Pick a great domain name that reflects your company. This should preferably be your company name and if that’s not available, try alternatives that users can remember. Search for available domain names at www.domaintyper.com.

Newsletters

While many visitors may just visit your blog (or subscribe to its feed) to learn about your latest offerings, many visitors forget about your company or services once they leave your website or, after they’ve completed business with you.

Consider investing in a newsletter service like MailChimp. The service very well rounded and feature rich. It allows you to connect with your visitors through email in mass. Send your website visitors product information, promotions or simply wish them on a holiday. You can also send your existing clients new product information. Existing clients are a great source for business as they already know and trust you.

Social Media

Connect with your visitors and clients often. Talk to them and learn about what they want. Use Twitter to send quick messages to your visitors. Reply to users, ask them what they want or what they think of your services. Consider creating a fan page for your business on Facebook as well. Tell your visitors to join the page. Since many users access Facebook often, they will receive your messages often.

Build a streamlined and uniform social media presence. Create the same username on all networks.

This is just the beginning of developing your company’s online identity. Making use of all these tools will surely help develop an online identity and gain traffic. IMO – The online identity is built by what you do offline. How much do you connect with people, talk to peers, make a concerted attempt to show your face wherever your customers are present.

Another is that your identity is your product — as one of the product gurus (dont recollect his name) once said, “Half the battle of online presence is the product.”

The reason people do not show up on your www, do not open your newsletters, and do not talk about your product in the social media circles is that they’re not having any positive experience with it.

    2 cents,

Spot on. Sure, you need to ‘manufacture’ online presence upto an extent – and the above tips help – but nothing quite like a useful/gripping/engaging experience. The core of the product needs to be what the user keeps returning for as well talking to others about. Spend time on getting that right, first.

    Hi,

This is a really nice article.

    re newsletters
apart from mail chimp, can you suggest any free/paid bulk mailing stand alone software (rather than depending upon web based mailing sites)
to send mailers to exisitng clients.

i have tried many web based ones, but now i prefer to use a stand alone pc based software.

    kidnly share your views.

Thanks for your comments on the article. Try using Outlook with Business Contact Manager. Create your email and send them to all your contacts. The application is feature rich and works well with all the other Microsoft Office applications.

Aweber is a highly recommended email list management service. At 19 $ a month, it provides amazing features. Check out its website for more – http://aweber.com/

I agree with this article. You web presence starts of with a well though off url with a functional website.

Like Seth Godin puts it, if you do not have a great product no amount of marketing will save you. Case in E.g Windows Vista. Great Products sell. Design Thinking is the way forward.

Very true.A website is increasing more and more important. It helps users and visitors spread the message faster.

I think I heard some speaker(Seth Godin probably)say that for a startup’s message to spread – it must be remarkable – ‘remark’able – literally. There must be something interesting for a visitors to make a remark about the website to the person’s friend circle.

Nice article. I believe that online business is all about two things: a really useful product/service and showing up proper standard of the company (through above mentioned tools).

Users need to be assured that they can trust in the brand for its service and usefulness. That doesn’t mean the brand has to be well-known but company’s standard is often visible right at their home page.

If you take a look at some of the web startups in the west, they all have their websites with high level of standards (quality) along with social media.

    Great article..

I would also like to know of a bulk emailing/newsletter website that can offer some free services.

    Thanks

Absolutely workable phenomena, but the basis of success rests on first Customer relations in realty & Customer Focus Virtually.

if the objectives are achieved steady traffic is possible to the online version. then these ideas work.

If the product is totally online then SEO is a must to increase traffic.

    Why SMS2MINT

Although there are many portals providing similar services, sms2mint thrives on the quality of experience for its users, whether they are using it for FREE or not. SMS2MINT has solutions for both individual users as well as corporates, and our portfolio of services is constantly growing.

Another nitch SMS2MINT offers is that not only our users will be able to get the services for FREE, but also they would be able to earn rewards by using our services and spreading the word.

Our goal is to make sms2mint a one stop shop for all your SMS needs, and we’ll work hard to keep this service FREE for our individual users and very competitive for our corporate front.

Corporates! We want to earn your business, so we’ll go an extra mile to do so without compromising the quality of service. Quality is our motto and we’ll stick to that.

Although there are other portals providing SMS sending, not all of them are comparable. SMS2MINT stands apart from those who charge for these services by providing better service for FREE. Similarly SMS2MINT stands apart from those portals as well which provide such services for FREE, this time in terms of quality.

We want to redefine the meaning of word FREE. FREE does not mean lacking in other features such as quality, user experience, ease of use, service portfolio and so on.

We at SMS2MINT are very particular about the quality of service and a rich user experience. Be it the user interface or the flow of site, we have created a product thats rich in quality and provides a fulfilling user experience.

In addition we are providing much richer set of services, all FREE for individual users.

On the same grounds, our philosophy for corporate front is to provide a better service at a better price without compromising on quality and reliability.

So overall we think that SMS2MIT is going to become a widely used portal for SMS related services, both for individuals and corporates.
