bit hard to say. it seems like users who type into a chat box see their text show up in the form of a tweet so that could give them a clue but it does not seem to show this promotion part (#AamirKhanLive live ›http://ustre.am/8RtD). in a typical chat you are likely to converse so u might land up posting 2-3-5 times and then each post becomes a tweet to your followers – ouch (or gets posted as status update/news feed on facebook? – even worse) – sounds a bit spammy but obviously very effective.

interesting article.

one question – did users who were signing up to the chat know that their chat text would be automatically broadcast on twitter by ustream? did ustream have to get their permission specifically for this or is signing up for the chat implied consent?

Ya, i completely understand, I only said that the title could be more appropriate, this title is misleading as it suggests that Aamir Khan somehow played with hashtags and gives it a negative tone. And there are plenty of Indian hashtag related cases-tudies, take #chetanblocks or #FNDC09 for example. Formal events such as #FNDC09 have their tweets analyzed by a number of 3rd parties!

Today hashtagging is not simply a marketing gimmick, it is a legitimate modern-day practice. Whenever we organize an event, we assign it a specific hashtag to track all the tweets around it. If a large number of users tweet about the event (and use that hashtag) it automatically trends on twitter. In fact twitter-trends was specifically designed to identify these very events. So there is nothing to be shocked as how “Aamir Khan PLAYED with hashtags” and give this or any other event a negative tone. The article could be more appropriately titled as “How aamir got twitter trending!” as opposed to how Aamir khan tried to ‘play’ with twitter!
