Gurgaon is all set to get GPS based vegetable vendors from January 14th. Launched by Adarsha Thoughtworks, the first set of 30 outlets by January and will use alternate technology to preserve vegetables and fruits (technology incubated by National Innovation Foundation).

What’s so special about these devices?

They are fitted with GPS devices and will be run by a central control room in Jaipur and operated by women entrepreneurs who will be trained to run the software as well as hardware (the company is working with NGOs to identify women SHGs).

“With 150 in Gurgaon and 1500 in Delhi and NCR, we plan to launch over 25,000 mobile kiosks in 25 cities in a span of one year. The project will provide self-employment to 9,000 micro-entrepreneurs. The pushcarts will also double up as `Mobile Citizen Service Centres’ where citizens can submit and collect various forms and documents related to the civic body.” – source

What’s your take on this initiative?

Great idea. Had worked out a similar idea in 2002 but never started it. ;)
Walmart is planning something on similar lines too in india.

    Nice initiative.

But wonder how it will help the non-techie housewives who buy vegies? How does knowing the location matter to the housewife and benefit the vendor? There are hundred of vendors, no one waits for them i suppose.

Another tech vegetable seller – http://mandionwheels.com – for Surat only.

It’d be better if Google latitude/location could be used to find where potatoes are at this point of time :-)

Good idea … and i believe it works like … a women entrepreneur sits and takes ORDERS and DIRECTS the closest vendor?

How about using MittiCool to preserve the unsold vegetables?
