I understand the fame part... not really sure on money front :)
My point is if Google spends the same energy on things other than competeting with MS, they might be better off in the long run and even deliver better products out of thier stable.

I don't believe Google is developing OS to compete MS-OS as a OS-to-OS head-ON ... Won't be surprised if Google comes out with dump-terminal kinda PC's to have NetPC.

Google wants to sweep the market of home/browsing centers/etc., where people use PC's only to browse, email and some simple documentation/presentation purpose...with dump-OS to connect to net and then have everything on Google

that's for money & fame raj!....and to promote revolutionary products over the evolutionary ones. Google will definitely like to see their search algorithms getting complimented by their OS...haven't you figured that out already?

That's pretty interesting development Riaz.... MS ain't very clear whether can rip themselves away from traditional thinking and claim that they have already been working ground up on VISTA!...sadly they have been cornered by this Google development. Pretty darn wrestling up now...!

Check out Microsoft's answer to Chrome OS, Microsoft Gazelle: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10280270-56.html

Also - for Chrome OS to work Google are going to need to back it for a long time before it sees any major traction. For it to even get that traction it is going to need mainstream adoption.. and that is also not going to be easy..

Not sure why Google really wants to compete with Microsoft in OS market. That too create a open source OS. Despite being free, Linux has not been able to gain any significant share from MS. I doubt Chrome OS is going to do any better.
As commented @ http://blog.thoughtsinprogress.co.in/2009/07/08/google-chrome-os-can-google-do-better/ Google can do better than this.

This is only expected of Google. Microsoft is stuck with old ways of doing business and Google is just releasing one product after another. All the products magically fits its grand vision.

Google is on the verge of becoming the next Microsoft. Its mobile operating system Android is giving some serious competition to Symbian and others. Now, with its online Operating system it is set to capture a fair bit of share.

To be fair to Microsoft all Chrome OS can do is eat away the highly fragmented linux share rather than eating away Microsoft's share.

Unless Google's OS is irresistable to leave Windows behind.
