John, point to consider here is that the standard of living is vastly different in both countries. So while you debate on what "dirt cheap" services we are offered, you should also consider the fact that the conversion from USD to INR doesn't affect Indians one bit.

No...you Indians do not have to pay much because your cell phone service in India is dirt cheap. The US cost for the G1 is a SUBSIDIZED cost. The United States is one of the three most expensive cell phone markets in the world along with Canada and Spain. ARPU for the US cell phone companies is $50 while in India it is less than 300 Rupees. Do your currency conversion and that is about 7 USD only. There are 450 millions cell phone users in India paying a total of only 21 billion USD for their services while there are 250 million cell phone users in America spending more than 200 billion USD on their services. You do the math and figure out whether your cell phones in India are expensive or not....they are not because of your no contract dirt cheap service. Oh..and by the way...take all that money you are saving from dirt cheap labor and dirt cheap healthcare costs and use that to buy your G1. America spends more money on healthcare than Indians spend on all consumer goods and services.

Of course man, 20k is a barrier. This phone should never be costlier than 15k.

HTC marketing guys are a--ho---. Just compare this stupid phone with Nokia
E-71. E-71 is having more new features (e.g advanced EDGE Class 32, 296 kbps, Videocall camera, WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML support, Document editor (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF) incl. MS Office 2007 support via free update, Printing) and ,
backward compatible features (e.g. infrared etc).
HTC doesn't deserve this price and should be in the range of 15K INR and I am sure
HTC's stupid marketing team will soon realize this.

I think the price is too high. Android is all good and geeky with the Google Brand but IPhone is the real brand which will sell at that price point.

Plus with the recent launch of the n97, I think at 30K, it is even more of bad price point to position this handset

This seems to be an exciting proposition. Whatever Google does brings some novelty to the customer.
I hope it does not go the iPhone way.
