Orkut opened up it’s api few months back and will unveil the third party apps in another few weeks.
The apps will surely be a boon for all those smart Indian startups who are dying to get the right audience and don’t have the muscle power to build another social network.
Platform wins over products and I hope to see some cools apps@Orkut.
What do you think will be the impact of Orkut APIs on Indian Social networks?
First off, most of the social network startups were struggling to get the audience, and now with open APIs, Orkut will have enough reason to attract the non-socionet products as well.
So essentially, Orkut had the audience and will now attract developers to create sticky apps.
Will India socionet startups survive this blow? Or, will they create their app @ Orkut (just the way MingleBox and Yaari included spamming/scrapping everybody@ Orkut, as part of their launch plans?)

I am not sure Orkut is all that relevant these days. Most of my friends have moved to facebook mostly because it’s private. Though the number of people on Orkut is definitely greater, most of the active ones have shifted.
But apps will definitely help to get more interaction. Basically you’d have more to do there. So it’s like playing poker with friends rather than just giving them a call. You can talk for half an hour (at most I guess) but you can race and play poker for quite some time…
I wonder if any of the Indian Social networks are thinking of an API. More importantly, if they have the talent to create a facebook like API. Opensocial definitely makes it easier for them to join, but I doubt if developers would even be interested in writing applications for them.

i dont know if u know this but ibibo is goin to launch som more than a 10 apps by april. kejriwal and sidharth rao were also talkin about developin widgets fr indian networkin sites in the days to come and i know fr a fact that ogilyone is workin on this full time – so to answer yr question yes, they r quite ready and i gues would m more relevent than facebook/orkut apps .. so i gues u shouldn’t write them off so soon!
