Analysis of Local Search Market in India : Google vs. the rest

November 16, 2007
By sinha

We started a poll sometime back asking our readers to vote for their preference of local search engine.

local search

Out of 120 votes, Google clearly leads the pack with 58 votes (~50%). OnYoMo follows closely and Dwaar/askLaila share the last position (with 3% vote each)

Well, of course the sample size isn’t big enough to say “Google is the king”, but this is surely a representative sample (most of the readers of this site are fairly techie in nature and early adopters to any new Internet/Mobile product in the market).

Has local search market game now shifted from X vs. Y to Google vs. X, Y, and Z? Before jumping to any conclusion, lets try to analyze the strategy of different players:

Guruji

Funding: $7mn investment by Sequoia Capita (Series A), and rumor mill says Series B funding of $10mn from Sandstone Capital.

Strategy: Guruji is into local content search as well as local business search. Guriji is betting big on the rise of local content adoption and have rolled out search in regional languages as well (Tamil, Telegu, Kannada and Hindi). Expansion plans include travel/flight, movie searches.

Analysis: Guruji’s execution so far has been less than average. The strategy seems to be too confused to be true. Are they India content search engine? Or a local business search engine? Or everything related to Indian content? I am not too sure (these are my perception as an end user)

Well, they had the best brand appeal (their IIT degree+MS/Silicon Valley experience resulted in good traction) and a cool brand identity. But the ground reality is that they have a bad product execution (so far) and an un-differentiated service.

With Google’s entry into the Indian market, Guruji will have to prove it’s mettle and probably define an area of focus.

OnYoMo:

Funding: Info not available.

Strategy: Instead of positioning itself as a pure play search player, OnYoMo is building smart utilitarian services around search. For e.g. they tied up with iXIGo for lowest airfare search and also launched movie info search service.

Analysis: Surprisingly, they are the most preferred local search player (after Google) and that could be because of the services they are building. Their service offerings does results in good brand traction and their partnerships also enables them to distribute their app easily. But going forward, they need to think about strong brand positioning (is OnYoMo a local search player or a mashup service provider?). In my opinion, they have skimmed the surface pretty neatly, but need to go a lot deeper (and pretty quick!).

askLaila:

Funding: $10mn from LightSpeed ventures

Strategy: City/Local Business search player, askLaila’s service is currently available only in Bangalore and will very soon expand into 6 other major cities

Analysis: askLaila has a strong management and technology team. And that shows up in the product. They have one of the best local search product, but the basic question is – Where is the differentiation? What is it that Laila can offer and the poor girl Google can’t? They have launched couple of cool stuff (like proximity based search), but the end result remains the same, i.e. they are a search engine without any niche.

JustDial:

Funding: raised $12mn from SAIF Partners in 2006.

Strategy: Their offline presence has created a strong brand value and that’s why there is a huge amount of “trust” factor with the brand.

Analysis: They have a trusted brand name, have got a great product (powered by Ziva), but that’s not enough. It’s time to change gears. The SERP is a sucker (search for Citibank ATM, MG Road, Bangalore and all you get in SERP is a page with all possible ATMs and weird resultset). In general, JustDial is clearly ahead of other local competitors, but they probably need to fine tune it’s search.

Dwaar:

Funding: Dwaar (along with Bixee, the meta job search engine) is now part of MIH India

Strategy: Pretty much same as asklaila or Guruji, i.e. they intend to be the preferred gateway for local business search across Indian cities. More than the product, MIH wants to use Dwaar as a search platform and get into different verticals (they already have job search, Bixee and have rolled out the Matrimony search).

Analysis: Only if MIH executes everything as planned. And so far, their flagship product, ibibo (read our review of ibibo) hasn’t done any wonders. So, essentially Dwaar has to succeed as a platform, or a product? I don’t know.

And the result?

All of the above mentioned players, in my opinion seems to be just scratching the surface (everybody has indexed lifestyle++ services, like restaurant etc). If you want to fight Google and steal away a significant market share, you need to do what Google can’t.

Be it the deep India search (i.e. index businesses which don’t even make it to the yellow pages, like plumbers), or maybe building relevant services around search (say, voice search like Ubona?)?

Google is Google not just because of it’s search algo, but because of the trust, it has built over the last few years. It’s not easy to break on through the other side, but I don’t see any of the desi search engines even reaching there.

Two years down the line, who do you think will survive the G-effect? Share your opinion.

Read our earlier coverage of local search market and content market.

We haven’t included players like Burrp, Zook and Yulop  for the simple reason that

  • Burrp isn’t a true local player
  • Zook and Yulop are still trotting

What if M$ and Y! also become serious player in india. The GYM effect to all desi will be strong and will generate lots of heat to desi Search Engine.

Solving day to day ppls problems by technology is the way to go instead of pussing hard to develop Mee-Too products.

Its hard to change good habits of ppl: the habbits of using Google. Even Rediff and Indiatimes are playing hard with dead crap UI no usefull services and making lots of noice with low amplitude in signal.

In my view AskLaila and OnYoMo get some mkt share. but rest will hang upside down.

This is another interesting view – even if one discounts guruji’s numbers because they are not only local search…

  4. Charath on November 16, 2007 at 11:44 am

Fine thing you mentioned burrp at the end. I believe it is important to include them in these conversations because they have stayed true focused on a niche and are doing it very well.

I have great respect for pluggd.in unfortunately you have not done a sincere job this time around. Please do not sell your soul for whatever may be the consideration. For your kind information both alexa.com and trafficestimate.com two most reliable traffic estimate sites Rank Justdial way ahead of its competitors.
Alexa india ranking are as follows
    Justdial ranked 155
    onyomo is ranked 25182
Trafficestimate.com shows the following number of visitors in november
    Justdial 720,000 visitors
    onyomo a pitiable 18000 visitors.

  7. subu on November 16, 2007 at 12:07 pm

And BTW likes Guruji do not qualify as pure local search site. Local search is all about businesses and direction. For your education please check out local.google.com.

  8. sandeep on November 16, 2007 at 12:17 pm

JustDial has its own indegeously developed search engine for its website it is using ziva anymore

  9. sandeep on November 16, 2007 at 12:18 pm

we at justdial are not using Ziva search engine for our website anymore

  10. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 12:45 pm

@Subu:: Is Alexa rank a true indicator of product quality (and user engagement)? I am surprised to know that.
Your statement – “likes Guruji do not qualify as pure local search site” – then, what is Guruji all about? Weren’t they supposed to be “the Google of India?” My confusion is pretty much on the same line.
ANd if you think alexa is a good estimate (for India specfic site), let me ask you – DO you have Alexa toolbar installed? If not, then how do you expect non-tech savvy users to do that? Alexa is a good indicator – and that ways, we are doing better than asklaila and ilaka! [so does pluggd.in gets a higher valuation? > $10mn?]
Again, your statement – “Local search is all about businesses and direction” – please check tthis page from Guruji.
    – Now do you mean, Google maps integration (acc. to you, local search = business + maps) can actually make Guruji a local search player?

Let me ask you this – “WHy do you use Guruji for?” Local search? Business search?
If you say Guruji isn’t a local search engine, then why do they have this feature? You are actually saying “They have this feature, but you know what – If it doesn’t work, go to google? !”
I agree Guruji is more than local search, but what’s “more about Guruji?” – Indian content search? I get lot better results from Google than Guruji!

The review is purely from strategy and execution point of view – and Google’s entry, I am sure will separate the boys from men!
As far as JustDial is concerned, I have mentioned that they have the best execution so far! Their offline service is amazingly cool and that will drive their online service as well. But they probably need to add more services than search.

  11. Sri on November 16, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Justdial, simply doesn’t serve everything required, rather i like there Phone service[though it rips my pocket]….

Now let me talk abt local search, what in the world is local search, would it definitely have a meaning stating you need to understand local scenario, local flavor and more localized effect, let me put it this way….to open up a channel and help local services improve rather than discounting them from a Yellowpages entry and tracking them through phone numbers, well this way it doesn’t work, u got to strengthen the market gap by providing every local service dealers a chance along with user reviews/ratings and much more to do and off course giving the user what he searched for..

example : I did search fro Dosa in justdial for the city Bangalore ” I found none”,

well its easy to have a parser working for extracting data information from yellow pages, but who in the world would serve localized data? where is the streamlining of information u give out?….only helping out in branding your product and every time analyzing through ALEXA [u could always improve Alexa ranking by having a toolbar running/ let me not explain it more],

I would rather have apprehensions abt these search engine effects, kindly be more superficial than a yellow page client……I am sure there are many local search entrants, but again its a huge market to conquer with…..Google, well its GOD, it can aggregate, can serach and confine and do many things, but where would again Google get its data from, dont’ say me Google has been doing some off line work to gather info, rather its not, We too run a local search engine [very nascent at this stage],and trying to gather info on a local level doing lot of off line research nor where does localization comes into matter?

  12. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 1:06 pm

“Please do not sell your soul for whatever may be the consideration.” – Well, I haven’t done that and neither plan to do that.
The review, as I have said earlier is my observation/analysis of what each player is doing. Till 6 months back (i.e before Google’s entry), things were different. But now, each player needs to carve out their niche and somehow I don’t see that happening very prominently.

  13. Sameer Shisodia on November 16, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Good analysis, Ashish! I do suspect the google usage is driven thru the intgration with google.co.in a lot! I also know a lot of the tech, yet blog-unaware crowd at some of the biggest IT companies in Blore who hardly know the space, and mostly little beyond JustDial’s phone number for this space. That Google throws up local results for some queries has probably got noticed tho. The other names are not-really-in-the-users’-heads by and large.

Yeah, Zook’s still trotting, and there are changes in the offing. We’re emphasizing on the community aspect of the information space a lot, and we clearly did not message this part strongly enough earlier. In that sense we’re not really part of the same space, though yeah, we will probably solve the ‘relevance’ problem (for signed in users) a lot better because of this. Keep watching…

  14. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 1:21 pm

@Rajiv – SERP, in my opinion is the first resultset that one gets after hitting the query. JustDial throws too many options, which I believe shouldn’t be the case.
Search for Citibank ATM, M G Road throws these options:
    Atm Centres
    Atm Machine
    Atm Card
    Atm Card Mfrs
    Atm Centre-dhanalakshmi
    Security Service Atm
    Atm Centre-amanath Bank
    Atm Centre-american Express
    Atm Centre-andhra Bank
    Atm Centre-axis Bank
    Atm Centre-bank Of India
    Atm Centre-bank Of Maharashtra
    Atm Centre-canara Bank
    Atm Centre-central Bank
    Atm Centre-centurion Bank
    Atm Centre-citi Bank
    Atm Centre-corporation Bank
    Atm Centre-federal Bank
    Atm Centre-hdfc Bank
    Atm Centre-hsbc Bank
    Atm Centre-icici Bank
    Atm Centre-idbi Bank
    Atm Centre-indian Bank
    Atm Centre-karnataka Bank
    Atm Centre-oriental Bank

Why do I have to go thru’ so many options, when the search query was pretty clear? It’s a qn. of usability and I am not too impressed

  15. rajivnair on November 16, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Ashish, You need to be taught how to use a website.Justdial clearly differentiates between search by company and category. when you select the company radio button you get absolutely relevant result to what you are looking for i.e citibank atm in bangalore which is a specific company related search.
you never switched from the product bottton to company that was your mistake.
Now your question is why have two radio buttons.why not a single search box…..
The whole world needn’t copy what googles of the world do. Justdial is a very successful company in its sphere they know what is best for their user.

  16. rajivnair on November 16, 2007 at 1:47 pm

    Ashish,
I searched for uttappam in bangalore in google local I got the following result
Your search for uttapam near bangalore did not match any locations.

    Suggestions:

Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
    Try different keywords.
    Try more general keywords.
    Business Owners: Add/Edit Your Business

  17. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Google has around 90% search engine market share in France (non-English speaking country!).

If Goog can do it in France, why not India? Where are the differentiating services from India’s Baidu ?

Recent comScore research put Google at just over 60% market share for search engines worldwide, and Yahoo second with around 14%. Third? Not Microsoft, but Chinese search engine Baidu with about 5%. Microsoft has around 3.5% share worldwide in search engines, according to comScore. [source]

  18. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 2:00 pm

@Rajiv – You mean to say Citibank ATM is a company info? and not a service? In my opinion, Citibank corp office/balance sheet is co. info and ATM is a service.
Well, I am a typical user and maybe, on the dumber side! But that’s how others perceive too. SO, maybe JustDial is too smart (but not that smart to understand the query?).

“Now your question is why have two radio buttons.why not a single search box…..
The whole world needn’t copy what googles of the world do. Justdial is a very successful company in its sphere they know what is best for their user” – Amazing! JustDial knows what’s best for user more than the user.
They should remove the feedback link from the site too, then.

  19. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 2:05 pm

By the way, search for Citibank ATM, m g road bangalore (company check box) gives me

    Citibank Loans
    Mg Road,-560001
Also See: Personal Loans, Finance Agent, Personal Loan-Citi Bank
    Shelters A Citibank Associate

Also See: Personal Loans, Personal Loan-Citi Bank
Citibank Bridgestone Financial Services Primrose R
    Primerose Road,-560025
Also See: Home Loans, Banks, Loan
    ATM Consultants

Maybe, JustDial was smart enough to understand that since one is looking for ATM (i.e. money), why not instead show the users results of citi loans (more money :D )?
I guess, I am dumb and JustDial is way too smart for me.

  20. R Nagarajan on November 16, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Isn’t the sample size too small esp. given the fact that competing brands are in a nascent stage. While Google has attained the national spread and awareness, what about our locals. May be we should test the usage level in the territory where they have done some growing. Nagas10

  21. Ashish on November 16, 2007 at 2:40 pm

Nagarajan: I have mentioned that in the post too – sample size is small, yet representative of what’s in store for these companies (post – Google arrival).

The post is not about market research (who has what %), but analyzing the strategy of each player.

Google is the de facto search engine worldwide and maybe, startups need to find out their own niche to fend off the G-attack!

  22. Saurabh on November 16, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Rajiv – Looks like you work for JustDial ! What’er be the case, if a product expect users to behave in a “certain manner”, then you should define that – i.e. if you really smart, use this product.

Why can’t companies take feedback as-is?

Guruji, according to me is actually a victim of it’s own branding! They raised the expectation when they started the co. – everybody was talking about them. every blogger was interviewing them. Media went high on them. Expectations were very high.
And like any new struggling startup, they have their own problems (which doesn’t meet the expectations). And that’s why everybody believes that they aren’t performing.

On JustDial, try searching for “PVR” in Bangalore :)

    Just try it!

  34. Bidu on November 17, 2007 at 11:14 am

As a search engine, Guruji & Google can crawl all other players…. & parse their entire local yellow pages & show them in their Search Result & none going to stop them.

So for me OnYoMo, JustDial, Dwaar & Ask Laila, or any other are just sub-set of Google or Guruji’s Super-set.

  35. A User on November 17, 2007 at 8:55 pm

Well I am just a general user, and wanted to share my experience,

I searched for “Creche service in Dadar” on OnYoMo, and I got results for Courier Services!!

I searched for “wheel chair” on Onyomo, and Man, I got The Hilton Tower Hotel!!

“blood bank 24 hrs” on Onyomo, I get Centurion bank, Union bank, ABN Amro bank

These you can try for urself.

    “c&f agent” on Onyomo

“Health Club in Powai”, on Onyomo

    “dust bin manufacturers” on AskLaila.

    “c&f agent” on AskLaila.

  36. netiquette on November 17, 2007 at 10:59 pm

I have tried all these search engines and realized that as a general user, Just dial perhaps has the best data – accuracy, classification etc, though it doesn’t offer a great search experience. Guruji seems to be on a losing ground. Asklaila is emerging well as a local search. Dwaar can do wonders if they add a few more compelling verticals – this is quite a unique strategy for the Indian market. There is a Google, and then there are others who are only focusing on hyperlocal search. It will be interesting to see how the market evolves over the next 1 year

  37. One of the Indian start ups on November 19, 2007 at 12:32 am

Mr. Ashish : This is called “paralysis by analysis”. Apologies for being a bit blunt. But on a frank note – folks like you are “all talk and no play”. Which means – People like you do not know what it takes to execute. Or what it has taken the likes of Guruji, Onyomo, AskL, Dwaar et al to execute and challenge the others. We have seen many losers like you who can just analyze and talk some strategy. But when it comes to action, execution and disruption – I am sure you fizzle out. In fact, we wonder what is your contribution to the Indian Internet industry? Can you name at least three things that you have done that have changed the shape of the Indian Internet market? Or the organizations that you represent? Hope you do not take this as a rude shock, but as a “wake up call to you to get real”.

Why do you think somebody should sympathize with Indian startups? Do you go to a grocery store and search for “India” only food? – If Indian products are facing competition from MNCs – they need to get smart!

If you have a problem with the analysis (i.e. if you think it’s wrong), say it! Such statements simply shows your immaturity.

  39. Mahesh on November 19, 2007 at 5:09 pm

    @One of the Indian Startups.

What do you say about this Micheal Arrington Post who is blaming the ChaCha product, albeit ChaCha Founder is a high profile person.

See one thing i want to clarify: Those who speak like the one above[pluggd] and TC are those who take care of startup products and the one who just smile be infront of you are those who doesnt like your product. Its better to st fwd than indirect like trojan horse.

Are there any profits for analyser?. Its also require lot of efforts to analyse and put it on the blog.

Whtevr feed back entrepreneurs/startups get either +ve/-ve, one should accpet them and filter out -ve and imbibe only +ve things. thats how one improve.

    Ashish,

Interesting analysis. I wonder what proportion of the vistors to your site actually voted on this.

  41. Ashish on November 20, 2007 at 10:40 am

total votes: 120 in a span of 2 weeks. I didn’t announce the poll (in any of the posts) and wanted to capture only those votes who were out of interest..

The numbers aren’t really significant (I can extend the poll to a month and I guess we will still get the same results, with some +/- % on indian startups). The thing is Google will drive all the traffic from it’s search engine to local search (you need not go to local.google)..while other players have to find out ways to be on top of consumer’s mind.

@@One of the Indian Startups. – Don’t see any point in replying to you. If you tell me why my analysis is wrong, please do so. Better use your “attacks” against your competitor.

  42. One of the Indian start ups on November 20, 2007 at 11:59 pm

With respect to your analysis : It is immaterial and there are no surprises. You are behaving as if you have cracked some complex problem. It is simply stupid. Comparing start ups with a company that has been in existence for donkey years!

And Yes Master Ashish: No point in replying to us. We are aware that folks like you have no gumption to do so either. But we still hope that you got a “wake up call”. We are confident that after having read our small note in this so called blog of yours – ‘you did look at yourself in the mirror!’. Our final suggestion (As Samaritans) : Show something to the Indian Internet industry! Do something! Execute! Create something from start! Make a difference! Prove to the Indian internet industry that you are not a loser! Jai Hind!

    • Shhhh Kids on August 5, 2008 at 10:21 am

This just goes on to prove how immature you are.It would be great if you could spend this time trying to improve your lousy product- (whatever that is) rather than just slandering someone who did his research and did it well.
C’mon ,you need to get real and make a kick ass product to succeed ,not pick fights like a bunch of school boys.Grow up,get real and then spit fire.

And don’t take it to heart if your product sucks. The big players work, they don’t waste time and stoop so low.A good product sells itself.
PS: Get a chill pill, maybe your search engine could help you find one.
      ……And I can’t stop laughing. :P

I don’t know how much reliable is this information..as per recent comscore reports Google share in india is near to 80% and Rediff is the only player having some substantial market shares in india..rest all search engines are fractional.

guys pretty interesting discussions but you have missed out our site http://www.findnearyou.com

      • Ashish on November 7, 2008 at 1:49 pm

That’s very natural to miss, because http://www.findnearyou.com is not worth a look. What’s with the weird music does it play when someone enters the website?

        • ram on November 27, 2008 at 1:03 pm

          Hi ashish

Thanks for your comments. I would like to know why is it you hate the site so much. To the best of my knowledge we do not play music when you open the site. We have been trying hard and are growing steadily without any funding support or fancy names. We started with 3.7 million plus ranking and have come to about 1.2 lakhs something ranking in Alexa.
Have spent many sleepless hours trying to make everyday decisions simpler for people.Over 6 months we have launched our services in 7 cities and our people have worked over the nights to validate data not because we could pay them but because they also swear by user experience. Your comment is a slap on our faces and I want to take this as true user feedback and would only be happy when as a user you recommend us to some one.

          Thank you .Ram

The sample size isn’t big enough to say “Google is the king”, but this is surely a representative sample (most of the readers of this site are fairly techie in nature and early adopters to any new Internet/Mobile product in the market).

Onyomo is frikkin’ 24%, you must be kidding, lol!

  55. Anuj Rathi on November 13, 2008 at 3:32 pm

One year, long time. I guess you’d get VERY different results if you hold that poll again on your website. I wish you’d come up with one soon :)
