What’s in a name? the domain name?
Well, lots – especially if you are one of the big companies.
Have a look at iWhois and you will be surprised to see the dates of registered domains like IBM, Xerox etc. Though they have been old school/traditional workplaces, but they were probably ready to embrace the Internet as early as 80s.
Few interesting facts:
- IBM.com was registered on 19-Mar-1986
- Xerox.com – 09-Jan-1986
- GE.com – 05-Aug-1986
- Sun.com – 19-Mar-1986
- Intel.com – 25-Mar-1986
- Adobe.com – 17-Nov-1986

Interestingly, these companies are undisputedly the “Build to Last” ones – and the very fact that they were ready to have a web presence in early 80s shows the long term vision as well as ‘Early Bird’ phenomena.
By the way, Google is registered till Sep 13, 2011, while Yahoo.com is owned by Yahoo till 2012!!. And MS? It’s registered till 2014!
