A $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit challenging YouTube’s ability to keep copyrighted material off its popular video-sharing site threatens how hundreds of millions of people exchange all kinds of information on the Internet, YouTube owner Google Inc. said.- source
As YouTube fails to protect copyrighted video being uploaded, Google blames Viacom for attempting to threaten user’s freedom of expression!!
So much of arrogance? or a losing war?
Freedom of expression does not mean that one can allow copyrighted material to be uploaded (and hurt publishers) – and if Google is so serious about "being clean", why do they allow porn content in YouTube India site?

this will seriously dampen google’s growth prospects.
“hy do they allow porn content in YouTube India site?” bcuz More traffic to those content. You can count the total views of those all the porn which exceeds the total views of all the desi web sites.
MIT Is developing tech to reduce this, here is YouTomb by MIT
If they want, they can control uploads of copyrighted content.
Or, why not do with copyrighted content, what they have already done with google books ?
If they want, they can control uploads of copyrighted content.
No most of the old content is not digitally signed with a fingerprint o its hard for a software to check that out .
real problem with music industry is not Copyright law or YouTube or Even sites like Napster or P2P . real problem is an Industry group named RIAA . they should shut it down and gradually every thing will be ok
I was thinking of something that requires manual involvement, like a “Report Abuse” button, followed by manual verification of the abuse.
Solutions aside, I am not a fan of DRM or any kind of controls being put down on sharing content. I agree with you that RIAA should be killed and other business models like the ‘iTunes Model’ will start gathering more steam.
another perspective
rather than a medium, user(who uploads copyright protected stuff) should be punished. Incase someone uses mail service for unlawful purposes, we are after that miscreant. why not the same for online video?
Interesting perspective! – the diff. is mail is meant for pvt consumption, while things like videos are meant for public consumption.
Whats ur take?
Does that mean we(users) are free to abuse online forums?
Every indidual should have a responsiblity towards a social system/online forums(by looking at Indian roads, I dont believe that we know something about that). By respecting and using it right, we are helping them to sustain a longtime.
Having said that, I do not advocate google/any other online sharing
As the classic napster case says, there are
(ref. http://law.freeadvice.com/intellectual_property/copyright_law/napster.htm)
1.Direct infringment
2.Contributory Infringement
3.Vicarious Infringement
I dont deny that google is involved in Contributory Infringement/ Vicarious Infringement. But I dont agree they are the only party to be punished.
I believe unlawful users should be punished more than the medium. But it is practically a tough job to do!
How about a community monitoring system ? I would quote wikipedia as a best example for this act.
Let the commonsense prevail !
