Gurgaon techie has been held for posting derogatory message against Sonia Gandhi on Orkut (probably this group?)
Though the person who created this group (called “We hate Sonia Gandhi”) hasn’t been charged, this techie (Rahul Krishnakumar Vaid) is being held for posting “vulgar” comments.
If proved guilty, Vaid could be imprisoned for up to five years and may have to pay a fine up to Rs 1 Lakh.
Well, its okay for Orkut to share the IP address/details when requested by police, but the basic qn is what kind of checks and balances does Orkut has?
I don’t see any filtering of obscene words (twitter does it, btw). If Google is so particular about “blocked” freedom of speech, why can’t they filter what goes inside orkut?
I know and understand that not everything can be allowed in the name of “freedom of speech“. But I find it ironical that orkut wants all Indians to use Orkut, and the moment somebody goes out of the way in “expressing themselves”, Google simply hands over the IP address to the police?
Any commercial platform, no matter how neutral it sounds, is always skewed towards the ‘law of the land‘, and hence needs to have basic checks and balances in place. Frankly speaking, I don’t see the case with Orkut.
A “safe” socionet product requirement is to have atleast a “report abuse” section – Does Orkut give a damn to that?

I have also heard that the Smart Girls Pic from Matrimony sites are copied and pasted in Orkut by creating Fake Account and that a.c has call girl no. [not acctual girl no but different no.] and huge vulgar pic. Orkut is becoming like a hell.
we can’t blame Orkut or Google for what users post on Orkut forums.
I think Indian govt. should make the laws clear to the common Indian Internet user.
Though I do not support publishing derogatory messages in public forums, if the user knows that there are strict laws which can punish him to prison, then no user would try to do such things. Its lack of awareness about laws. Someone creates law and puts it there, but who knows what it states.
Make the laws accessible to the citizens. Most of them do not know such laws exist till they land up in jail.
I think a better approach by Orkut or Google would be to put a link to the laws on the community forums and in TOS.
Few months ago police arrested a person for his bad remarks on Great Shivaji (Maratha Empire) in orkut ,he was under custody for more than 2 weeks, later police found out that they arrested a wrong person as ISP given them wrong IP address.ISP saying they got wrong information from Police about time of such a remark posting. There was confusion between AM/PM.It was headline in TOI….For this treatment the arrested person file a case against POLICE as well as ISP……I don’t know what happened after that….
Can you imagine why Orkut is doing something like?
1. abilty to see anyone’s friend list
2. without even knowing the person, you can scrapped them.
3. You would be able to see anyone’s scrapp…
In NUTshell …No Security.
The reason, more the open platform more it would be popular…more
user more success
Everyone including me is against derogatory remarks on things that are
attached to people sentiments….
But at the same time The system should be efficient enough
not to Attack innocents..

This is a worldwide thing and my post was more against Orkut’s feature sets that enables spying and such behaviors.
