Google has done it again! Google has put all the Gphone rumors to rest and announced it’s ambitious mobile platform, Android (a robot that resembles a human being), an open-source mobile operating system.![]()
Just when we thought all dominant players in social networking would be teaming up with Google on the OpenSocial platform, now we see the same happening for all mobile manufacturers as well.
Android is being developed in co-ordination with Open Handset Alliance. Participating manufacturers include Motorola, Sprint, Samsung,T-Mobile and many others. This is obviously a smart move from Google as they kept the radio silence when all future speculations of Gphone were made (and of course, this unprecedented move has triggered the stock market and the Google share are headed northwards [with market cap of $207 Billion]).
Android – what and how
Android is based on Linux OS and Java and the SDK version would be available within a week. Android will be available to any phone manufacturer to build a software application layer on top of it and to easily use Google applications, mashups, Maps and any third party apps.
This is a huge blow for Symbian and Windows mobile, provided they come up with similar offerings and challeng the growth of Android.
By the way, did you notice that Nokia is not part of the Open Handset Alliance? That’s probably because Nokia has it’s ambitious plans which conflicts with Google’s!
What’s your opinion about Andriod?
Do you really think Google is open about all the openness they show (OpenSocial/OpenAlliance), or are they creating another walled garden (an open one powered by Google adsense)?

There are a couple of new resources about Android mobile. A community for Android developers has been set up called http://www.androiddeveloper.com which aims to be a hub for developers using the platform.
Another site called http://www.androidmobileforum.com has been set up for everyone to discuss anything about Android mobile.
Hopefully these will be useful as Android becomes more popular and is talked about more.
Its a brave leep by GOOG (as always) in mobil world. There’s always something in store isn’t it !!
I always wondered why GOOG is not on mobile before DodgeBall, but this is really a very impressive move i must say. There were already few OS on linux-java iff i am right, but there’s surely a difference when GOOG is involved. Eager to see more on this space.
