Gmail Gets Autofill in Search Box. And it works!

Just noticed that Gmail search box has an awesome auto-fill that fetches email ids (+names) as you type.

google compose search

As you start typing the name/email id, you will notice the Google auto-fill. It also fetches the matching labels, if any.

Quite a neat implementation, especially for those who have been using Gmail for so many years.

Is this something new or I was sleeping through?

Update: While some of you argued that this is a year old feature, Gmail’s official blog has announced this feature now.

Search Autocomplete and Go To Label
Start typing in the Gmail search box (English only for now), and Gmail suggests terms that might help you find what you’re looking for — from contact names to labels and advanced search operators.

So I wasn’t sleeping through. Others were just too wide awake!

Gmail Labs announced this feature today : http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/gmail-labs-graduation-and-retirement.html

Search Autocomplete and Go To Label
Start typing in the Gmail search box (English only for now), and Gmail suggests terms that might help you find what you’re looking for — from contact names to labels and advanced search operators.

We’ve integrated Go To Label into this search box as well. If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, type “g” then “l” and instead of getting the old “Go to label” pop-up, you’ll be in the search box with the “label:” operator filled in for you. Start typing the label you want to go to, and autocomplete will take it from there. All you have to do is hit enter. If you want to send your cursor to the blank search field, the keyboard shortcut “/” will do it.

      Guys,

I suddenly remember the Maggi Ketchup advt….its different, but what’s different?

Technically what you both are saying is similar, in most cases your browser remembers your contacts, emails, and other things which you would have typed.

Google has gone to the extend of using auto fill using perhaps a webservice which digs into your database (address book) and many others (only those people know which all) and displays names email ids….or rather the right names. This is not a easy job guys, this is also proactive thinking, WOW!

A typical implementation guy has to face this and many similar or worse problems every day in life. Imagine if you had developed this service (searching through database), how difficult it would have been for you to convince people who generally think they know it all,….or worse try to tell people this is something different which you have pay for.
