What made you join a startup?

    Since this is such a vibrant startup/early stage community, I want to understand from folks who have joined a startup and not necessarily an entrepreneur.

    I assume the 2 are different beasts. The entrepreneur or the founders are the more risk savvy and the ones who have started it all, but then they need good people of varied skills to make their dream a reality.
    The more the experience and the age at which you join a startup, the learnings will be more interesting for a guy like me (caught right in the middle of the 2 worlds and need to make a decision soon :-)

    So what has driven you to join a startup?

  • In a startup everybody is learning…so you do not really have a boss telling you the HOW of things. You are thrown into the water from day 1. Either you figure out how to swim or you just get drowned. The most exciting part for me has been the on- the-job learning. It’s the best place to learn and get your hands dirty.

  • I joined InoVVorX in August 2012.
    Reason 1 : I was not happy with my job @ IBM.
    Reason 2 : The co-founders were my batchmates from college.
    Reason 3 : (most important) the exposure you get is unmatched.

    Till date, I haven't regretted this decision. There have been ups and downs. But I know for sure, that this experience will do wonders for my resume.
  • I am soon going to join a really cool start-up, will let you guys know soon. But what I feel is that a start-up, in fact a promising start-up is the best place to be in if you really want to learn stuff, its more of a on-the-job learning like @ShilpiChoudhury said. The best part is your voice will always be heard, you can make significant contributions to the growth of the company. The experience and learning is huge, but you the fact is you should have a heart for it. If a high sounding brand name is what you are looking for then a start-up is not the right place for you. 
    But, if you really want to learn and contribute, I believe a sensibly driven start-up can be simply heaven. And a few years later you can look back and say that you played a crucial role in making the company what it is...

  • More than anything the chances of personal growth are enormous, you get to learn new things everyday....
    It is a big decision to take in the initial phase of your career, but the risk is worth taking, since the pleasure of working in a start up can only be understood when you are actually doing it..!!! 
  • Worked in a Services company for 2 years. Couldn't adjust to the culture and soon realized that I wasn't a right fit there. I hated the kind of work I was doing. Life was becoming monotonous and boring as days passed. Started hating Technology and geeky stuff (which used to be my first love). Said the F-word to my Team Lead (there's genuine reason behind that, believe me). I was almost on the verge of being thrown out of the company (though, I knew it wasn't that easy to be thrown out of a huge services company).

    All these things and the passion I had for web (I've been writing HTML/CSS since I was 15, PHP since I was 17) made me join a web startup. Joined the startup 1.5 years ago (I'm Hire #1 in India) and living the dream ever since.
