The "we are a startup" Excuses
  • I continue to be amazed by the number of statements by founders I hear where "we are a startup" is used an excuse for something - either an excuse for blatantly copying (point #5), or not doing their homework on the industry, or not pitching to the right markets, or seeing their bigger competitors cash in while they focus on something else.

How many have you heard? What's your typical response to such statements?

  • Good thread @Manish. This is what I call 'startup echochamber' - i.e. 'we are startup and treat us nicely. do not screw us with tough questions et al'.

This doesn't really make sense - people need to realize that they are not 'doing a startup', but are 'trying to create a business'. 'startup' status is just a way to get started.

  • @Manish:  ours jute manufacturing and export business is also the same, new venture, new subject, new strategies but in this 1 year i only used this word " we are startup " single time.. and that too to a supplier who demand us to buy more fabric. we cant buy that much fabric and we dont have sufficient cash reserves.  i tried all ways to make sure that what ever the requirement fabric quantity i need, i just need that much quantity and nothing more

After facing too much conversations finally i told him the truth that we are startup. and we cant put up bulk amount at this time.. Then he understood our problem and sent us the only quantity that we required but also ordered us that next time we have to order more  :)

    Thanks
