JEE, AIEEE to merge [IIT Entrance]
  • The Ministry of human resource development will soon call a meeting of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Council to stamp a decision to merge the IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

After much resistance, the IITs have agreed to join the ministry’s bid to have a common entrance examination for all engineering colleges in the country. This only happened after there was an agreement that several elements of IIT-JEE will be part of the new national common examination.
A student’s Class 12 marks and entrance exam score will have equal weightage. [HT]
    ------------
I am not really sure if giving equal weightage to class 12th marks is a good idea - I know of several cases where students focused more on JEE than CBSE ('s archaic approach to phy/chem/maths).
There are 15 IITs in India and from what I have seen, the newer ones are struggling for finding good professors and worst, even good infrastructure. Instead of simplifying the input (i.e. students), the government needs to worry more on ensuring that the output stands to the brand.

  • I find it amusing remembering the big debates between "12th!" v/s "JEE" groups in our school classes.

    Anyhow, thoughts:

    1. Merging of "Class 12 Tuitions" and "IIT Entrance Coaching" industry. There is a significant overlap already, but now it will zoom up. The "arre beta, 12th ke liye to padh hi raha hai... chal JEE ke liye bhi tayyari kar le." mentality will soon be a norm, if not already.

    2. I don't see them simplifying the input. They're just changing the mix of students that enter now v/s those who will enter after this scheme comes into force.

    3. Ensuring the output to be consistent with the brand is the hard part. What has happened since NRN Murthy's comment on the output quality? Did that wake anyone up?

  • I welcome the idea of having one single Examination. It clearly helps students to focus on one exam, one pattern and adapt. Currently we have 8 different engineering examinations JEE, AIEEE, EAMCET, GSAT, BITSAT, IISER, KLUSET.....WAT NOT?

Its time for a sea change! Offlate, after change of pattern of JEE, IITs are not really happy of the quality of input of students.

Plugging in 12th score is so stupid! How can they rate across different boards. They can not compare Andhra Pradesh state board with Karnataka state board. Board Exams are not competitive exams. They are just qualification examinations! Not worth considering them. That would make IITs like BITS Pilani where AP students dominated and spoiled! :P

UPA is quite successful in raping IITs! They have increased them to 15 while 7th IIT Guwahati is still struggling to attract students to their CSE B.Tech!
