Times of India VS The Hindu [Ad War]
  • Times of India recently launched its Chennai edition and the fight is ON with the incumbent, i.e. The Hindu.
    Watch this ToI ad:

and now, watch this Hindu ad:

    --
Whose side do you take? I am not a big fan of ToI, but surely not a fan of Hindu (and the boring/political coverage). To me, Hindu ad is like 'insulting youth (hell! you guys don't even know this?') and won't really appeal to new audience.
For sure, ToI will create a new audience for itself (more sleazy/entertainment oriented content), but Hindu needs to acknowledge this competition and I certainly hope that they also re-innovate the newspaper.

  • The whole readership of Hindu is based on what you call "boring" . There is no point in re-innovating Hindu, We love the way it is. As far as the ad is concerned, in my view its a satire on the ongoing journalism war in India and how the real news is getting lost in middle of it. India's youth need to be more responsible and move ahead of "soft porn"( read times of India )
  • Well, I believe the ad presented by The Hindu is definitely brilliant stuff and hits right on the face of TOI but along with that I agree that it is quite a punch on the face of our generation too, definitely not going to appeal the new audience. Not me for sure...

And I guess some top news articles in between the "soft porn" (also read as TOI) wudn't hurt much to the new gen. I ain't a fan of any of these two, but I do check TOI specially for the flashy ads...

Saw this on Facebook - surely ToI has got Hindu to think creative. In short, it's working (well for the readers).

  • News is News. One really cant change the News in itself, but the way it is presented to the readers, with a neutral stand-point and not to gather/increase readership. Have not read "The Hindu" anytime since my birth, that is last 27 years, so no offence against it.

But I can only draw a comparison by Ad`s put up here. TOI targets the fact, Hindu Puts u to Sleep. Where has The Hindu, hails the Youth Dumb, my middle finger will do all the talking for it.

Today`s Youth is more knowledgeable than what is imparted/reported in TOI/The Hindu.

  • @azhar & @prateekPanda Valid points guys.. I do read ToI. I have a respect for The Hindu..
  • The Hindu is definitely one of the better ones in today's newpapers/websites but personally I did not like the ad that much. I think the quality of news in TOI has been going down for last few years as they scale to new locations even compared other publications from their own stable like ET.
  • Well, Deccan Herald for me.! Its a cross over of TOI & Hindu..! Metro life covers all the gossips n the main newspapers suffice me with the news (National + International + Local) including Sports.!
  • Yes TOI does sell because of its presentation and Hindu as many times I tried got me to sleep. So I guess that I read at least something rather that not reading anything is better. I do respect Hindu for the content and all that but more people get knowledge from Internet these days. So I guess though they have a point regarding content but Individuals who want to read can still read good stuffs from Internet.

  • Frankly, if you are enjoying Hindu's agressive, cheesy and cheeky ads - you are probably a ToI reader and I am not sure if loyal/ardent Hindu readers will take it in the right spirit!

  • I agree with you @sinha. I havent ever read The Hindu newspaper but have read quite a few articles on their website through my news agregator and I really like their content vs TOI but I didnt like this ad alot.
  • Hindu (ads) have become more of ToI ads - a sign that simply means that ToI has its impact on Hindu! The thing is Hindu is playing a defensive role and those who are sharing their ads (on Facebooke etc) are probably ToI readers, as they are enjoying the cheesy/cheeky ads.

  • Bah... TOI is not even a real newspaper. I’m part of this ‘new
generation’ and I still feel that if you think TOI is good, then you truly
deserved to be ‘insulted’ by the ad. Hindu is definitely not boring—not to
loyalists anyway—not sure if it’s right for every Tom, Dick and Harry though. I
mean there are people like Varadraj (refer to his wise comment above) who have
a say about Hindu despite never having read the paper—that’s the stock of
'elitist' readers TOI would love to keep. @Varadraj, your middle finger
is your only eloquent accessory. I swear by Hindu, warts and all, it’s the only
newspaper featuring quality journalism in India.

  • Probably the final piece:

And in a way, they are right - ToI has woken up Hindu and got the creative juices out.

  • Looks like to be the final piece, as its in much bad taste.
Getting personal and targetting CEO and Editor is not cool, and to retaliate will mean Hindu getting low to TOI level. I guess this is the final piece, but then if Hindu now comes up with something cool and not low then its game Hindu, either way TOI ain't gonna win this ad war.
  • i quit reading The Hindu -- not because i found it boring, but because of its blatant leftist/socialist bias. I am surprised no one else feels this way. i couldn't stand it. kicked it out on reading an editorial supporting the strike by SBI employees.

  • Did anyone talk about final piece...we have more!! [Edit: added the image]
