12 Rules for Startups
  • - Don't start a company unless it's an obsession and
    something you love.

-. If you have an exit strategy, it's not an obsession.

    - Sales Cure All. Know how your company will make money and
how you will actually make sales.

    - No offices. Open offices keep everyone in tune with what
is going on and keep the energy up. If an employee is about privacy, show him or
her how to use the lock on the bathroom.

    - As far as technology, go with what you know.

    - Hire people who you think will love working there.

    - Know your core competencies and focus on being great at
    them.

    - Never buy swag.

    - Never hire a PR firm.

    - Make the job fun for employees.

    - Keep the organization flat [link]

  • Well since you only included 11 of his rules in your post, I'll come up with Rule #12

    - Never strictly follow a list of rules for your startup that you read online ;) Not everything applies to everyone.

I personally think formulating an idea for an exit strategy is not a bad idea. If you try to raise money, it's often a question your investors will ask. But the rest of his rules are pretty good generally. PR firms can be useful at times though.

For anyone who reads this later and looks at Ashish's post and says there are 12 rules there, well then it's probably because he edited his original post

  • Can I add one more?
    - Don't do it for the sake of the glamour surrounding the current hype in India :)

  • @naghma - yeah that's the rule # -1. that is, even before one is starting up.

@sameerparwani - these are basic rules (no rocket science here), but sometimes one ends up appreciating these articles (and writers) for the simplicity with which they 'uncomplicate' the matter!
