Does restaurant rating really help in making decision to what to eat?
  • I love to try new restaurants and their dishes. It's very easy to find a restaurant based on reviews and ratings but I get confused about what to eat there. Do you people think the same? Is the present restaurant rating/review system sufficient for us to decide where and what to eat?

  • You have asked the qn which has been on my mind for several months/years.  I firmly believe that the answer is NO. Overall restaurant rating doesn't really matter a lot - unless its on the extreme and 90% of the time, 90% of the restaurants will fall somewhere in-between 2-4 (in a scale of 1-5),

The typical qn - 'yahaan ka kya famous hai' - i.e. review of menus is what makes it very interesting.

And what you are talking about is what Kevin Rose' Oink app is precisely solving this issue - i.e. rate discoveries. Do not rate places, rate things inside them.

  • The trouble with all of these ratings is there is no uniform baseline against which these things can be rated. I agree with @sinha when he says that rate individual things because there you have some measurable.

  • Since different people rate things differently you can try making better ratings by comparing Mr.ABC rating of place X with our own rating for the same place and then apply relativity on the Place Y 's rating from Mr.ABC. And another good way to get rating is social ratings from people you already know.

  • Thanks for your feedback Prat. Based on your valuable feedback I have tried to solve this problem. To solve this problem, I have come up with an android app Eattr where people can tag what do they love or hate at restaurants and then other people can also rate those food items. People can find what best and worst at particular restaurant. Eattr can be download from following links. Feedback is always welcome. Keep on discovering new restaurants and food.

    Thanks

  • its better if you put up chicken 65  and select one restaurant from a list of restaurants in specific area.. those who rate a restaurant for chicken 65  that's going to solve the problem.  In India for every few hundreds distance, new language, new taste, new mode of living and etc etc. so its like in hyderabad, biryani is the best.. but in biryani  who comes first in taste, who comes first in rates, some people look for quality food for more money. but most people look for more food for a good affordable price  but that too quality but not like quality in Taj Hotel..thats where i love deals, i might get more varieties of food in a good place for some few hundreds.

Best option is to rate restaurents based on food item and also according to location.. hope i didnt crossed the limit :)

    Thanks

  • Hi Sai,

Thanks for using chicken 65, I love it...

On serious note- That's a very good feedback. I also believe that people always want to rate restaurants based on food items. I will definitely include this feature in my app. Since I don't have menus in my app, I will have to wait for some time so that I have enough tags (food items) which people have rated and provide best results to users.

Once again thanks for your valuable feedback.

    Thanks

  • Nice Discussion. Restaurant Listings and reviews do help to an extent in terms of choosing where you would like to eat. But for some people it all comes down to trying out good Food. You may go to the best rated restaurant but servers the worst XYZ food.

So it depends on what the person is looking for. you cant totally dismiss the Restaurant rating after all.

  • I doubt if ratings or comparisons work at all. Now before you come at me with pitchforks (or kitchen forks since we are on the topic of food ... kitchen forks ... get it? Errrr ...) ...

By ratings I mean giving a certain restaurant/dish a certain number of stars or points. Eating-out and dining in my opinion are holistic experiences. Aside from the fact that there is no real qualitative way to rate a dish etc the ratings aspect falls short of conveying what will be the experience of eating at that place ...

Also by experience I don't mean some jazzy ambient space necessarily. I remember having beef rolls at a hole in the wall sort of place near Brigade Road - the place was filled with smoke I couldn't even see what I was eating - it is the best rolls I've ever had ... I dunno if something can be done to convey that via an app or a site :)

  • @Bijay, very good suggestions. I am working on on your second suggestion for now. People will trust reviews/recommendations from their friends rather other someone whom they don't know. It will surely help people to explore awesome food.

@sagar, by rating food items, I am trying to solve problem that you described. Once I have enough tags and rating, I can provide search feature for tags. People can find best rolls near by or at given restaurant regardless of restaurant. I hope that what you meant. Thanks a lot for feedback!!
  • I'm surprised you guys are saying no. In the USA, Yelp ratings and reviews are an amazing source of information and definitely heavily influence the new restaurants I try.

  • I am also of similar view like Sameer. Have extensively used Yelp, and Foodspotting (app that is focussed on dishes) in discovering new places to eat, in US. Before trying a new restaurant in Bangalore I use Zomato, Burp etc for reviews. After narrowing on a restaurant I usually search for credit card and other deals, Employee discount etc. And usually most places have some or the other deal.
  • Reviews yes. The point was the ratings become less useful, over time, as one doesn't really know the other people rating stuff, and their tastes. In a more (subjective) review - you can pick out the "people like us" crowd, and go with their reviews.

  • @Sinha and @sagar. Thanks for you valuable points. @sinha, your point is valid, there should be something to rate items beyond restaurant rating. You won't believe, I brain stormed oink idea with my friend 2 years back and here we have oink....i guess Kevin Rose over heard us :). I have published an restaurant finder app -Eattr(on Android) and I am planning to have this feature in Eattr very soon. I think that should be really worth it. Thanks for supporting this idea.
  • No absolutely not. Its like telling all Indians are brown. EVERY restaurant I have gone to and patronised has a few awesome and few awful dishes - you cant compartmentalize it.

This is apart from the comments above by @sinha and @sagar.
  • Hi Krishna

Good!! no thanks just get another plate chilli chicken 65 and enjoy it :)   All the Best

    Thanks

  • Nice article. :) Thanks Sameer.
  • very good point @harshamv. I have also had few bad experiences at very good restaurants because I did not ordered what was best there. This is the problem I am trying to solve via eattr android app.

  • @sameerparwani & @trivediravi, I have also used yelp extensively to find good restaurants. In spite of finding good restaurants I ended up eating something which was not good. That's true, every food item at a restaurant is not awesome. Every restaurant is famous is famous for something. Yelp helps me to find good restaurant but nt to find what is best at that restaurant. One way is to through all reviews and figure what is good but that takes time. In @Eattr android app, I am trying to solve both problems. First find good restaurants and then find whats best at that place. I have seen people cribbing about long reviews too...that's another part I am trying to solve with tips. People want small and crisp reviews. Hope that makes sense.

This thread is going very interesting...Thanks you guys.

    Thanks
    Eattr
  • Hi Subrat,

For me, Most of the times, its the menu. I do have a few apps of zomato and bakasura. But most of the time i prefer to check out what they have to offer in terms of the menu & variety.
  • Hi Madani,
Thanks for quick reply, but i have one doubt, menu kind of thing is not fixed for a restaurant, they changes oftentimes. Is that not a problem for consumers??

  • @ subrat,

well, if you follow bakasura, there are loads of pics at various restaurants at various locations at various times. So depending on the area, mood and liking for a specialty food we decide to go to a particular restaurants.

  • Dear friends,
It is a very nice discussion, i agree the point that we face this problem to find out a good restaurant where to eat.
Thanks to all friends who shared their views and ideas to solve out this problem.

We are exactly working on this case to solve out this problem & along with provide better quality data to the consumers, we at ZOOTOUT are coming with Specialty of restaurants and where to eat around the city. Currently we are in beta phase for Indore & Ahmedabad city, by end of Feb first week we will go to other cities of India.
Do visit our efforts http://www.zootout.com and would love to interact with you people further regarding the same.
Thanks Ashish Ji for this kind of platform, it really helps to the early stage ideaters & startups.
  •  Zootout, very nice interface. When I was trying pizza and selecting locality, most of the time, I did not not get any result. Then I kept where field empty to see result. You may do something in this area so that people don't close website if they don't find restaurant in specified locality.

I have seen Maps play a very important decision to choose local restaurant or business. It will be very nice if you could show results on map as well. I know show restaurant on map when I choose one restaurant.

Menus are nice to have but if you really want to go extra mile with menus, do not put menu images rather feed menus in DB and then display. You may think about social menus. I hope you got my point.
  • I usually take advice from Zomato for restaurant outings. I rely on it for prices and cuisine, ofcourse the genuine comments from its editors and few of other members are also handy.

End of the day, it all depends on the collective mood of the group your in.
  • I feel enough has been done with collecting data and reviews. Prompting a user to rate or write reviews for a food place etc.

Currently making sense of the data is more tabular like. Basic push and pull will work when you are actively looking for a place to dine. But most of the eat out decisions are impulsive, this require serendipitous discovery which is based on some recommendation engine and presented well.
  • @buddhasource, very nice idea! I agree with you that restaurant discovery apps should use Facebook social graph and provide food/restaurants in a beautiful manner. Most of the existing restaurant reviews website have reviews but those are not linked with FB social graph.

I published food discovery android app Eattr and your idea will definitely help me to provide something that people love to use. Thanks.:)
  • @Eattr.. Hope you got most of the views that you really looked for.. i wish you all the best

    Thanks
