Reality in numbers
  • How do we truthfully verify some of these numbers bandied about e.g. this post - http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/networking-ties/460387/ says SMSGupshup has 32 Million users - how does one verify what kind of users are these? How many of them are real who come back and use the service. How many of them are active?

  • It's almost impossible to verify these types of numbers, that's why you have a whole industry of third parties who attempt to quantify the viewership of websites (or television for example). Alexa, Comscore, Compete.com, Nielson are all firms who provide these types of metrics. There's also one India specific version but I forgot the name at the moment

  • This is why media is so loved by PR companies (and vice versa).

CEO of a BIG Internet company in India once told me that one should never state the actual numbers, but should always lie truthfully.
For instance, 'we get <x> million views/month' - x need not be the actual visits, but the views of your static files too (for instance if you are sending a mail to 1 million users and 20% open the mail, count 20% in the views because they are calling your logo file which is located in your server".

    ..you get the point,  right?

  • These are all vanity numbers. Only way to verify would be to have a 3rd party research firm look at the analytics but i doubt companies would be willing to open the books.
