Facebook Launches SMS subscription Service in India

Facebook has launced  SMS subscription service in India (quite similar to Google SMS Channel) that lets you receive SMS updates from your favorite Facebook pages.

In order to subscribe, sms fan <page_name> to 9232232665 or one can simply click on ‘Subscribe via SMS’ on any of the FB page (via).

FB SMS

As we mentioned earlier, brands are preferring Twitter over Facebook and one of the reasons for doing that is the quality of engagement Twitter offers.
By bringing in push services, Facebook is also taking on Google as well as Twitter; and will probably strengthen it’s offering in India (fyi: FB’s sms service is powered by SMSGupshup).

What’s your take? Will it hurt the other sms channels, like MyToday?

The only good invention that happened with SMS is the shortcode… rest are looks not-able-to-monetize business to me :-)

Free is an economy only and only if the production cost is minuscule … Let us see who bleeds and who wins in another 3-5 years time.

Good move from facebook as it will help them increase their reach and more importantly frequency of reach – community buildup.
