Opportunities for Email Marketing Business in India

September 11, 2009
By sinha

The opportunity for email marketing business in India is primarily because email still is the number one media that provide a higher return on marketing investment. Also because of the economic slowdown, a lot of companies have a constrained budget and are looking at optimally utilizing it for more direct, cost-effective and highly measurable email marketing option. Moreover growing usage and adoption of email by Indian internet users provides a compelling reason for companies to best use this channel as a must have and an effective marketing mix.

The volume of the emails sent by Indian companies is just 1 billion a month in contrast to 45 billion a month by US Marketers generating $1.6 billion business a year – shows how advanced markets are using the high RoI channel effectively. Despite the global economic slowdown, worldwide use of the internet continues to grow, and by 2013, there will be 2.2 billion internet users in the world.

With this large base of internet consumers, advertisers are realizing the power of drip marketing for their customers, prospects, and leads database. There is a range of mailing solutions from in-house, hosted bulk mailing solutions (provided by Indian Application Services Providers) to Global Email Marketing Service Providers.

Indian companies are still in need of a Email Marketing Service Provider, who can provide end to end solution from email blasting to delivery of email into inbox and feedback report on emails delivered to inbox, blockages by ISPs (Internet Service Providers synonymous with yahoo, gmail, rediff, aol, etc. who also provide email accounts), spam traps, spam complaints, reputation etc. Marketers also need a fully functional and all inclusive featured Email marketing solution that provides a high data security (ask for certifications), high performance email delivery throughput, more robust, high availability and rich reporting and a highly experienced support team.

Raising to the genuine needs of the Indian Companies and Marketers, few companies are beginning to emerge in the Indian scene, with local presence and strong email marketing domain and technology expertise.

There are quite a few email marketing companies in India but its the extent of knowledge of the issues involved and the quality of service which one will provide can be the distinguishing edge.My search for a good Indian e mail marketing company which is cheap enough for a startup was disastrous and led me through lots of crap companies before finally having to settle for netcore.

    @Abhishek

I would completely agree with you on that, there are lot of mom and pop shops in India. And certainly one cannot expect the quality that an enterprise would anticipate.

I think you should mention the companies that you had to go through- This will help the readers as well.

May I ask why you say “Indian companies are still in need of a Email Marketing Service Provider”

… when companies like Interspire, lyris, constantcontact, smtp.com etc. (not counting non-hosted options like phplist etc.) offer email marketing solutions on the web in a SaaS … with fairly competitive pricing, all the features one needs and reliable email delivery.

Posting vague articles by “guest authors” is a good marketing strategy…..did this article help anyone? I doubt it. Even the guest authors website is not working. One definitely expects better quality from Pluggd.in.

These days lots of email marketing mails seem to be hitting the junk and spam folders; I guess companies would appreciate a service provider who can show em a sure-shot way out of this. Further, there are lots and lots of start-ups popping up nowadays, who need marketing rather badly; these guys dont have a proper idea as to what email marketing is, and how it can benefit their business. Maybe you could reach them.

  6. Anindya on September 13, 2009 at 11:14 pm

I received an email which was “powered by” Sprinklr, on behalf of their client.
    1. It was definitely unsolicited email.
    2. I went to unsubscribe by clicking the “unsubscribe” button and went to a webpage which offered to “safely unsubscribe” me; but, here’s the catch: the email address mentioned there (purportedly mine) was that of some Ramamurthy )-:
While sending unsolicited spam is probably the issue with the client’s business process, the second issue was that with the email delivery provider.

    • Pratyush on September 14, 2009 at 5:11 pm

      Hi Anindya,

Sprinklr does not have a powered by Sprinklr thing :) .
Secondly I would agree that it could have been a possibility that some one would have put in your email id with a random name in the publishers list- Which is quite common as successful people like you make jealous acquaintances who could do such a thing.

So I would say you have done the right thing about unsubscribing it from the mailing list.

The system immediately takes care of it, however if you could tell us the publisher who had sent you this email, then we could give the feedback to the concerned person.

      Cheers!
      Pratyush

Email marketing is nothing but a spiced up name for spam.

Spam is defined as sending unsolicited bulk emails, and I find it more and more annoying to receive stupid “newsletters” to websites that I have never subscribed. Its disheartening to see more startups getting funded in the spam space. More such startups have popped up in the “SMS marketing” bit.

In an ideal world, emails and SMS would be used for personal messaging, and for reading messages from the sources the user subscribes to, not for some asshat company trying to announce to the world about their unsolicited viagra campaigns, or SEO tips.

    • Manjunath on September 15, 2009 at 4:58 pm

      Hi Anuj,

If you have received email from someone, to whom you have not given permissions to send, you can always classify it spam. ISPs take note of this and block such spammers. You can unsubscribe from the emails, even if you have given permissions when you are tired of receiving uninteresting emails from them.

Most of users will need email messages from genuine marketers for whom they have give permissions to send emails to keep them updated on news, offers, discounts, alerts, etc.

Good Email Marketing is genuinely based on sending emails to users who have given their permissions. It has evolved a lot taking note of the privacy concerns, opt-in policies, giving users options through out the communication and frequency of mailings.

        Hey Manjunath,
Thanks for replying. I agree with whatever you have said. But currently, the email scenario is far from perfect. 80% of all email generated is spam (will give you a reference, if you so require). Where do you think those emails are originated from? My point is, most of the email marketing business is black-hat. And it will not sustain as a business if it is only “opt-in”. How many percentage of email users actually go and subscribe to particular websites for receiving newsletters? My guess is <1%.

If people are genuinely interested in reading the latest stuff going on in a company, they would subscribe to RSS. I have first hand email marketing experience, and I have seen people buying lacs of email ids (on CDs), and targeting Software Engineers in Bangalore. The amount and quality of data collected by email marketers is awesome. At their wish they can spam any particular segment in any city even in India (which is considered to be not so internet savvy).

Now I cannot agree that all these lacs of users have opted in to get their emails sold to email marketers.

And if you really are into white hat marketing, can you give details of how do you acquire email ids of people to be in business? If you get all the emails from your clients, then what is the point of going to a specific Indian business, rather than use email blaster, or set up an SMTP on Amazon's S3?

And do you filter any email ids that you get to check whether they have opted in, or just blindly start sending emails?

  8. Karthikai on September 15, 2009 at 12:40 pm

I think some one should contact Ezeego1, I dont know what are they using but their offer emails, even the newsletters are landing in the spam… I have registered with them.
