Digital information will grow 60 times in India by 2020: [Report]

India’s share of digital information is expected to grow 60-fold by 2020 as per “The Digital Universe in India” a joint report released by information infrastructure solutions company EMC Corp. and market researcher IDC. From 40,000 petabytes in 2010 to 2.3 million petabytes by 2020 – the country is likely to create this amount of digital information propelled partly by organizations, but primarily by individuals sharing and downloading music, movies, photos, and the social networking boom. This is twice as fast as the anticipated global rate.

Speaking of current situation, Digital information in India created in 2010 is equal to data stored on 2.5 billion iPads of 16 gigabytes memory each. EMC expects that the deluge of digital information will translate into a significant market opportunity over the next decade. If these iPads were to be stacked flat one on top of the other, it would make 4.6 lakh separate towers, each as high as the Qutub Minar :-)

The report also reveals a growing mismatch between the digital information being created and the storage capacity in the country. Nearly 50% more information is created in India than there is storage capacity and this number will grow to 80% over the next decade. While digital information will grow 60-fold, enterprise investments in IT and staffing is likely to grow only in single digits. The cumulative effect is driving CIOs to transform traditional infrastructures into private cloud data centers that offer internal and external customers IT as a service.

With broadband penetration the situation is like this, with 3G getting launched a lot more information will be created on mobile phones too. So, do we see the challenge of storing, protecting & managing this phenomenally growing digital data getting bigger now? Is it time for growth estimation of cloud computing market in India to come true?

It would be great to understand, how human mind will adapt itself to process such huge information. There will be a demand for pre-processed information and precise content in the future.
Information overload will be one of the biggest challenge in the next decade for businesses and individuals.
Information mediums are growing both horizontally and vertically everyday, causing the attention span even smaller for individuals. It would be great to know how new age solutions can tackle this issue of delivering content.
