Why can’t angry Indians produce the next Angry Birds? Well, while we wait for that to happen, NCR based startup inox witnessed 9 million downloads in December 2011, as opposed to Rovio’s 4.6 million downloads (in the Android app store).

inoXapps is a start-up by IIT Delhi Alumni and some of their apps include Live Wallpaper, Finger Print Scanner, Ghost screens and few adult etc.

As per Xyologic’s December 2011 data, Rovio witnessed 4.6 Mn downloads while Inox had about 9.0 Mn (little more than Outfit7 which had 8.1 Mn). While Xyologic data has been questioned earlier, founder of inoxApps, Nikunj Jain did confirm that the number of app downloads they received was pretty much in line with Xyologic report.

Nokia joined the DUAL-SIM mobile party a bit late, but the company has emerged as a leader in the multi-SIM market with 19% market share, followed by Micromax (7.1%) and Karbonn (6.9%).

About 54% of 166 million mobile devices sold in India in the first 11 months of 2011 were multi-SIM devices, out of which 10 million devices were smartphones [as per a study by Cybermedia].

Given that those who bought Micromax devices 2 years back are now looking for a replacement, Nokia’s brand value does score higher than the other homegrown brands. And as a brand, Micromax has been more about the tangible marketing (i.e. advertisements/sponsorships) and less about the intangibles (trust/customer support etc) and it’d be interesting to see Micromax’s 2012 strategy to compete with Nokia and Samsung(s ) of the world.

Aside, Micromax recently announced new CEO and key leadership change that will help the company in sailing through the smartphone market.

Notion Ink has partnered with Texas Instruments (TI) for its next generation Adam II Tablets. Adam II will be using OMAP44xx processor along with other TI components like Wi-Link 7.0 and Phoenix Audio Power Amplifiers. Adam II will also leverage the power optimizations achieved using mature combination of TI’s integrated power-management IC.

Designed specifically for best Power Performance and Multi-tasking Experience, Adam II will be based on Google’s IceCream Sandwich Operating System.

Adam II will release the world’s first Modular Based Software Architecture which will further expand the scope of application development and use nearly every single hardware feature in a “user customizable” application. Drag and drop features will enable easy application modification and Open Source Module will further expand the use cases and tablet deployment. Node operations like in Blender, and “Application Authoring Tools” are primarily aimed at non-programmers for composing applications, games and use-case flows in a drag-and-drop fashion, utilizing visual editors and behavior-based logic system.[blog]

Essentially, you will be able to use the tablet as a logic analyzer, medical imaging device, signal acquisition and processing, 3D modeling and multi-media.

Is this a hardware release or a software release? If it’s a hardware release, be assured that the novelty will die down in 2-3 months and given Notion Ink’s earlier history of delayed launches, do you think Notion Ink V1 users will find V2 exciting enough to buy?

Existing customers Vs. New Customers – Where should Notion Ink focus on?

As part of National e-governance plan, Indian government has announced m-Governance framework that aims to utilize the massive reach of mobile phones and harness the potential of mobile applications to enable easy and round-the-clock access to public services, especially in the rural areas.

The following are the main measures laid down by government:

Web sites of all Government Departments and Agencies shall be made mobile-compliant, using the “One Web” approach.

Open standards shall be adopted for mobile applications for ensuring the interoperability of applications across various operating systems and devices as per the Government Policy on Open Standards for e-Governance.

Uniform/ single pre-designated numbers (long and short codes) shall be used for mobile-based services to ensure convenience.

All Government Departments and Agencies shall develop and deploy mobile applications for providing all their public services through mobile devices to the extent feasible on the mobile platform. They shall also specify the service levels for such services.

To ensure the adoption and implementation of the framework in a time-bound manner, the government will develop Mobile Services Delivery Gateway (MSDG), i.e. the the core infrastructure for enabling the availability of public services through mobile devices. This will be developed and maintained by an appropriate agency within DIT. MSDG is proposed to be used as a shared infrastructure by the Central and State Government Departments and Agencies at nominal costs for delivering public services through mobile devices

To ensure successful implementation of the platform with requisite levels of security and redundancy, following actions will be taken:

a) End User Interface: End-user devices include landline phones, mobile phones, smart phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablets, and laptops with wireless infrastructure. Mobile applications developed shall take into consideration appropriately the wireless-device interface issues, such as bandwidth limitations, micro-browser and micro-screen restrictions, memory and storage capacities, usability, etc.

b) Content for Mobile Services: Due to lower-bandwidth and smaller-screen characteristics of mobile devices, successful development and deployment of mGovernance will require development of separate mobile-ready content. Similarly, to meet the needs of all the potential users, the applications will need to be developed Framework for Mobile Governance in the relevant local languages for the various channels of delivery. Open standards and open source software, to the extent possible, will be used to ensure interoperability and affordability of the content and applications developed.

c) Mobile Applications (Apps) Store: A mobile applications (m-apps) store will be created to facilitate the process of development and deployment of suitable applications for delivery of public services through mobile devices. The m-apps store shall be integrated with the MSDG and it shall use the MSDG infrastructure for deployment of such applications. It is proposed that the store will be based upon service oriented architecture and cloud based technologies using open standards as far as practicable. The open platform will be developed and deployed in conjunction with the MSDG for making the additional value added services available to the users irrespective of the device or network operator used by them.

d) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for Value-Added Services (VAS) providers: MSDG shall offer suitable APIs to VAS providers with appropriate terms and conditions to ensure interoperability and compliance with standards for development of applications for delivery of public services.

e) Mobile-Based Electronic Authentication of Users: For electronic authentication of users for mobile-based public services, MSDG shall incorporate suitable mechanisms including Aadhaar-based authentication. This will also help in ensuring appropriate privacy and confidentiality of data and transactions.

f) Payment Gateway: MSDG shall also incorporate an integrated mobile payment gateway to enable users to pay for the public services electronically.

g) Participation of Departments: The Government Departments and Agencies both at the Central and State levels will be encouraged to offer their mobile-based public services through the MSDG to avoid duplication of infrastructure.

Now that tablets and touch devices’ wave setting off, there is a need to enable Indic input interface that would make typing in Indian languages natural and easy would be of great value. The crux of the ap is that you don’t have to remember the phone numbers of these voice services.

In general, Voice services are limited by the fact that they do not get enough information about the caller. All we get to know is the caller id and there is very limited information that we can extract from that. But in a mobile app we can get much more information about the caller including their location(with their permission, of course).

When the user dials the weather app (on KooKoo app exchange), the service will playback the current weather based on the user location. The data channel is not used at call. So location based services can be enabled for voice services. This innovative use opens up the door for a whole host of location based voice services.

Most importantly, the service provides discovery to Kookoo’s 1500 registered developers who have added value to Kookoo’s cloud telephony service over the last few years.

As far as monetization is concerned, all apps on the App exchange are free. But in the future Kookoo plans to enable paid apps as well. Developers can charge per minute credits to access their content (Users can buy pre paid credits from the KooKoo website and use the credits on the paid content apps).

Skirt Alert is an iPhone app that sends you a Push Notification when the weather is exactly right for Skirts! It’s the most fun weather app yet. And now it’s available in India too.

In our native Holland, during this cold time of year, we’re anxiously waiting for what we call Skirts Day: the very first beautiful spring day on which Dutch women decide to wear Skirts to celebrate that spring has finally come. [Wikibros, developer of the app]

Skirt Alert makes sure you or your friends know when the Skirts will be pulled out of the closet. The app takes your current location and Skirt Alert’s answer is always clear: Yes or No (Of course, detailed information on temperature, wind and precipitation is available, too).

Tell the app what’s a convenient time to receive a notification and you’ll find out if it’s time to get those Skirts ready. The interesting part about the app is that it’s not just another weather app, but a great piece of product packaging.

Aakash tablet has been the buzzing word of the year 2011 and while the makers of Aakash tablet have been having a ball, few reports suggest that government might refuse to extend the letter of credit (LC) to Montreal-based DataWind and the government plans to dump these tablets to rural villages.

The HRD ministry had initially placed an order for one lakh units with DataWind. It received 30,000 Aakash tabs as part of the pilot run. But it proved a disaster after poor the feedback received concerning these tabs. DataWind had reportedly refused to upgrade the second tranche of 70,000 Aakash tablets with improved specifications, for which it sought more funds. However, it will supply the second tranche of improved Aakash tablets at the original price of Rs.2,250.[source]

Even our review of Aakash tablet can be summed up in few words – it just isn’t useful.

Akash : Cheapest Tablet? Who Pays the Price?

Future of Aakash Tablet

Even though these reports are not yet confirmed and DataWind expects to get a Letter of Credit before January 30th (the deadline), we remain cynical and unsure of this initiative (where are the broadband pipes to get your tablet up and running with data?)

So who wins in the end? DataWind – they have built a great brand just in few months and have got enough orders for their premium product, Ubislate. Also, they could be partnering with Mukesh Ambani’s ambitious’ 4G project that plans to sell tablets at less than INR 3,500 price.

Guess who is the loser here? Hint: It’s not the government.

- HTC Desire S users typically uploading 3.23 times as much data as iPhone 3G users, the iPhone 4S falls just behind in this category with a typical 3.20 times as much data uploaded.

- 64 percent of extreme users were using a laptop, a third were using a smartphone and 3 percent had an iPad.

- iPhone 4S downloaded 276 percent more data from an operator’s network than did people with the Apple 3G (Galaxy S stood at 199%) [study link]

A tablet is a portable device that sits right between the portability of a smartphone and workload assistant of a laptop/netbook. Sure there were tablet PCs long before the whole iPad saga, but it was truly Steve Jobs’ idea of iPad that used a OS and UI tailor made for large touch-screens that revolutionized and brought back the tablets into mainstream. Speaking of which, you can’t deny that 2011 was indeed the year for tablets, starting with Apple iPad 2 to Asus Transformer Prime and everything in between.

If you are a person who fancies tech and gadgets then I am pretty sure that you would be wanting a tablet for yourself by now. As always, the market is full of a wide variety of tablets that are begging in the stores to take them with you. In order to rescue you from the difficulty of choosing yourself a right tablet, I have compiled a list of top 10 tablets in the market.

1. Apple iPad 2 – Rs. 27,000 (16GB Wi-Fi) onwards.

Love – iOS 5, Specially made iPad Apps, Great Screen, Fluid Web Browsing, Extremely fast, Amazing battery life and Solid built quality. And Apple, ofcourse.

Hate – Poor Fixed Focus Cameras, iTunes Still required, Comparatively low screen resolution.

Conclusion – Although priced higher, it is obvious that there is still no match to this tablet. Not only it is extremely fast and pleasing to use, its solid built quality and thin body makes it comfortable to carry around. It has the longest battery life till date so you can charge it once and forget the charger for the rest of the week if you use tablet casually.

2. Amazon Kindle Fire – Rs. 13,500 On Ebay.

Love – Extremely Affordable yet fast (Courtesy: Dual-Core processor), Good screen, Good Browser, Amazon media services are second only to Apple iTunes, Exclusive Apps.

Hate – Only 8GB non-expandable storage, No Extras (Cameras, Microphone, GPS and 3G), Some UI quirks.

Conclusion – It is the best and most usable affordable tablet to date. If you are geek enough then you can install Android 4.0 ICS on it in the near future.

3. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1/ Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 – Rs. 30,990 onwards

Love – Very good screen, lighter and slimmer than iPad 2, Fast, Android 4.0 Upcoming, Usable cameras, Good on-screen mini apps and good battery life.

Hate – Very limited set of tablet apps, No memory expansion option.

Conclusion – It is by far the best Android 10 inch tablet with all the latest features built into its thin and light body. It is also officially announced to get Android 4.0 ICS.

4. Sony Tablet S – Rs. 29,990

Love – New, fresh and easy to handle paperback-like design, PlayStation Mobile Gaming certified, Integrated Universal Remote, Android 4.0 Upcoming.

Hate – Low screen brightness, Proprietary and heavy charger, Average Battery Life.

Conclusion – It looks and feels different from all the other slim slab looking tablets out there. With ‘PlayStation’ certified games for mobile and an integrated all-in-one remote, it is a good tablet to be in your living room.

5. Asus Transformer – Rs. 29,990

Love – Keyboard and Touchpad Dock is really useful who happen to type a lot, Full sized USB port and card slot, HDMI out will be good add-on for media enthusiasts.

Hate – Low quality cameras, average build quality.

Conclusion – Sure it is a yesteryear’s tablet but with some great add-on in the form with a keyboard dock that doubles up as a secondary battery built-in. The HDMI port, full sized card slot and touchpad makes it look like a netbook replacement with an added advantage of touchscreen.

6. Motorola Xoom – Rs. 19,900

Love – Android 3.2 (Upgradeable to Android 4.0 ICS), HDMI, Low priced, 3G connectivity standard in all models, All the connectivity options and sensors present.

Hate – Heavier and fatter than other tablets, Dull looking design.

Conclusion – Although with a heavier body, it is the most affordable Android 3.2 tablet with powerful hardware and connectivity features.

7. Apple iPad (64GB, Wi-Fi) – Rs. 27,000

Love – Good screen, Huge storage option, Excellent apps and games, Great for reading books, Wide range of accessories, Awesome battery life.

Hate – No 3G connectivity, no cameras and limited 256MB of RAM.

Conclusion – It may be nearly 2 years old but it is still better than a lot of tablets out there. With a huge collection of apps and games specially made for iPad, it may never disappoint you with all the entertainment options. Excellent battery life makes it the cherry on the cake.

8. HTC Flyer (Wi-Fi + 3G) – Rs. 22,000

Love – Affordable, Good looking and great build quality; All-round connectivity, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, Speedy single core processor, Digital pen for jotting down notes and scribbling, HTC Sense.

Hate – Single core processor may not be able to run all high end games, You can buy dual core tablets and cheaper price, thicker than others.

Conclusion – With super sexy aluminum unibody, great 7 inch screen with HTC sense UI, it is the best and most affordable 7-inch tablet with Android 3.2 and a 3G connectivity option.

9. Samsung Galaxy Tab (7-inch, 16GB, Wi-Fi) – Rs. 15,000 on EBay India

Love – Faster processor than others, Good gaming performance and web browsing. Android 2.3 with Samsung TouchWiz 3.0 UI and good tablet specific apps from Samsung (Email, Calendar, Music Player, etc); Good screen quality.

Hate – No upgrade to Android 3.0 or 4.0 and average battery life.

Conclusion – This tablet is definitely the best Android 2.3 tablet with all the Google services. It has a good screen, it is light and easy to carry around; build quality is good too.

10. Akash Tablet/Ubislate 7+ – Rs. 2,500 onwards

Love – Super affordable making it the cheapest tablet in the world. Can play HD videos, Expandable storage, Android 2.2(Akash)/2.3(Ubislate 7+), Full sized USB port, Made in India.

Hate – None at this price. (Could have been excellent if they managed to fit a capacitive touchscreen though)

Conclusion – Finally we are proud of Indian government who launched the worlds cheapest tablet for Indian students and even subsidized the price.

What tablet did you buy in 2011? What do you look forward to? iPad, once again?

Features

The navigation device boasts of large touch screen (Between 15.7cm to 17.8cm), DVD player, iPod connectivity, USB and SD card support for movies and music, Aux-in and AV-in for connecting other audio and video sources, Bluetooth for hands-free calling, AV-in for reverse camera support, Steering Wheel Controls, AV-out to connect to rear-seat or roof-mounted monitors and built in FM radio player. The navigation devices will be powered by the latest MapmyIndia Maps v7.0 including Premium Content which offers unprecedented map details covering all 5,76,000 towns and villages at national level, 4000+ cities at street level, 36 cities with house-level details, 20 cities in full 3D, and 6.3 million points of interest.

The price of MapmyIndia’s in-dash navigation and entertainment systems range from Rs. 26,990/- to Rs. 39,990/.

An interesting packaging of Android tablet, though the pricing limits the product to a very niche audience. What’s your take on the pricing vis-a-vis feature set? Aren’t they competing with other Android based tablets or navigation apps on your mobile/smartphone device?

As per a recent report by Flurry, 1 billion apps were downloaded globally between Dec 25 – Dec 31, 2011 and Indians downloaded 10 million apps in 7 days.

Over the holiday “power week,” Flurry estimates that over 20 million iOS and Android devices were activated, and 1.2 billion applications were downloaded. Compared to the worldwide total active installed base of 246 million, this was 41%. China, the world’s second largest app market, which has roughly one-third of the U.S. installed base saw only one-fifth of the relative downloads. It’s important to note that the celebration of Christmas as a holiday impacted download performance. While the United States widely celebrates Christmas, China is largely non-religious, with over 60% of the population considering themselves agnostic or atheist. [Flurry/Via]

Western countries (US accounted for 42% share) dominated the list (but obvious), but China being #2 comes as a huge surprise.

What’s your take on the report (our first impression: extrapolated)? Convinced about the 10 million download numbers?

Aside, it’s important to note that 26% Downloaded Apps Are Used Only Once, that is – you still need to find a mojo for your app.]

* We have asked Flurry for more insights on India data and will update the post once we hear from them.

There seems to some kind of ‘scam’ going on with a certain call on your mobile, which when answered deducts Rs.45/minute(~$1) from your talktime balance. The said calls are reported from the following numbers +22455104323 and +22455104324. There have been total 3 reported cases so far of the call, 2 of which resulted in talktime deduction and the third was not answered. Though #missedcallscam was trending in Twitter Mumbai today but it was the same tweet getting RTed, so not much of a chaos.

The number which might look like a Mumbai number on the first look, given the 022 STD code, actually is an 11 digit international number and resonates with the African country Guinea that has calling code of +224 and the country follows a 8 digit standard phone number.

At this moment there is no certainty as to what this number is and if this is true or rumor. In case you get a call and you have no relatives in that little African country, avoid answering it.

A random search revealed some forum discussing this number for past couple of months but no case of balance deduction was reported.

Blackberry has slashed its Playbook tablet price in India by 50% (till December 31st). As part of festive offer, the latest prices for BlackBerry PlayBook in India are:

16 GB – Rs.13,490

32 GB – Rs. 15,990

64 GB – Rs.24,490

Blackberry’s Playbook hasn’t really taken off in a big way and RIM shipped only 200,000 units in Q2, 2011 (and only 150,000 in Q3). Due to low market demand, Blackberry reduced the price of Playbook tablet in US to $199 (from $300).

Blackberry Playbook in India

Given its current discounted pricing, the Playbook tablet could be a better bet than others like Reliance’s 3G Tab, though there is already a fear of Blackberry shutting down this unit, as it has failed to live up to company’s expectation (parent company RIM wrote off $485 million to offer discounts).

Game for Playbook?

India is a huge market for mobile devices and while 2011 saw the attack of branded Chinese devices, 2012 will be be the year when branded OS (Android/Windows Phone and iOS predominantly) will play the battle.

Report by Flurry suggests that emerging economies, i.e. China, India and Brazil will make up three of the top five market opportunities.

From Flurry blog –

First we used the “adult” population counts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which IMF defines as 15 to 64 years of age. Next, we adjusted our numbers based on the size of the middle class in each country, primarily using a study by Miller-McCune. We finally estimated the size of the upper class per country, who by extension can also afford a smart device. After making adjustments, we are left with adult consumers who have the financial means to afford a smartphone device per country.

Many of the world’s largest countries have largely un-penetrated markets, primarily due to standards of living (emerging markets) or increased competition for consumers’ disposable income (developed markets). In either case, the TAM is there, but the adoption hasn’t yet occurred. So, many of these markets are future bets with the time of maturity somewhat variable and unknown.

We are super glad to share our HTML5 site for smart devices like iPad. The HTML5 site can be accessible from http://m.pluggd.in, i.e. our mobile site URL.

Pluggd.in's HTML5 Site

We decided to skip the app route, as taking a seamless/integrated approach to mobile devices (including tablet) is more logical and long-term. The HTML5 site and mobile site are neatly integrated (powered by Mobstac) and depending on the device you use to visit Pluggd.in, the corresponding site will be rendered accordingly.

Pluggd.in's HTML5 Site

That is, when you visit Pluggd.in from your iPad, the magic should happen automatically and the site is rendered as per iPad’s form factor. And the iPad experience has to be different from a smartphone experience and that’s where the beauty of Mobstac platform lies.

Currently, the HTML5 site is in beta and carries a few known bugs (like auto-redirection doesn’t happen/works only with iPad), but all major bugs will be sorted out by first week of January, 2012.

Meanwhile, do give our HTML5 site (hop to http://m.pluggd.in) a spin and share your feedback (either in the comment section or email to: b@mobstac.com)

Aakash tablet, the cheapest tablet in India is sold out, as per the update on tablet maker, DataWind’s website.

DataWind, the makers of Aakash Tablet is now suggesting users to prebook UbiSlate, which is the premium version of Aakash tablet (the Ubislate price is Rs, 2,999).

The craze for cheapest tablet can be gauged from the fact that the keyword ‘aakash tablet’ has been among Google India’s top searched query for the last 3 days (shows up on website’s traffic as well)

As per a report by Hindu, DataWind can churn out 1,000 tablets/day and while they haven’t yet shared the registration numbers, it seems that the company will not accept booking of Aakash tablet and will instead force users to prebook the upgraded version, i.e. UbiSlate7.

UbiSlate Specification

Android 2.3 operating system,

WiFi & GPRS (SIM & Phone functionality)

Cortex A8 – 700 Mhz

The processor speed is 700 MHz which makes it three times that of the original tablet. It has a battery of 3200 maH, and lasts for up to 5 hours. It comes with a headphone/mic plus integrated speaker. Ubislate7 is scheduled to launch in the month of January, 2012.

An interesting development – do you think Aakash tablet’s supply is controlled so that the company can sell the premium version, i.e. UbiSlate?
