On behalf of Pluggd.in community, we wish you a super duper Happy New Year 2012.

2011 has been a great year for Indian startup ecosystem, but 2012 will clearly be the year that will bring out the men in boys and will surely drive a lot of new business categories. But before we get into (*yawn*) 2012 prediction, lets get back to an important ritual of new year – i.e. new year resolutions.

It’s the time of the year when you come up with new year resolution – sometimes under a peer pressure and sometimes when you really want to make that change. But once things settle in and life gets back to normal (post Jan 3rd?), you still would need to find a mechanism to keep up your new year resolution.

Here are a few tips that will help you (we shared some of these last year too).

Decide your mode of managing task

To those who use smartphones and try out 10 different applications to manage task, decide what do you want to stick to – A diary? or Outlook Task? Or Mail Calendar service? OR an app? The more you use different systems to manage task, the more excuse you are building for not managing tasks.

Set Goals

Resolutions work when they are goal driven. You can ‘get healthy this year’, but ‘20 minutes jogging every day’ is what makes ‘being healthy’ a viable resolution. Do not use statements like ‘I will improve my self-esteem’, instead use ‘I will join ToastMasters Club on January 29th’ (i.e. actionable and measurable).

Set Incremental/Attainable Goals.

Even if you want to quit smoking by 2012, you should set incremental goals (bring down the count to 2 packs/day by February, half by April).

Now take out your expensive diary and write these goals against the dates you have decided.

Though, there are online tools (43Things), but nothing comes closer to writing it down. So Just do it.

Do Not Have More than 5 Goals

Lets accept it. You can’t focus on new year resolutions beyond a certain point. The key to keeping up your new year resolutions is to keep it simple and at the same time, ensure that you aren’t running after too many high impact goals.

Do not go beyond 5 high-impact goals. Ideally, you shouldn’t be running after more than 2 high impacting goals at the same time. Keep it sequential, if possible.

Incentivize

Keep incremental goals and keep incentivizing yourself. It’s like a bribe, just that it works. So once you have brought down the daily cigarette count from 20 to 10, give yourself a bash.

-

Got more suggestions? Share them in the comment section.

Again, wishing you and your family a happy new year 2012.

- Team Pluggd.in

GOAP (Geeks on a Plane) is visiting India and the last leg, Bangalore starts from Dec 17th onwards. While there are a few invite-only discussions that we have planned with them, Dec 18th (Sunday) is when you can come over to Jaaga for SuperHappyDevHouse event, which is jointly organized by Jaaga and Pluggd.in.

SuperHappyDevHouse is a celebration of Hacker Culture. It is an opportunity to show off interesting projects you’ve been working on, hear about new ideas, get collaborators, learn new things, watch tech talks or hacker movies, read science fiction, and generally hang out with other smart interesting people in the startup / software subculture here in Bangalore.

We’ll have several zones for you to get your geek on:

The Hacker Lounge with tables and power strips for people to work on projects.

Geek Theater where we can line up tech talks, tutorials, and hacker movies

Gaia cafe sit, sip coffee or tea, nibble on snacks and look like the hipster hacker you are.

The Soap Box Auditorium where people can give short lightening talks about their projects, ideas or startups. Talks will be limited to 6 minutes each and then a couple minutes for questions. For people who would like to give a longer barcamp style talk, please introduce your topic with a lightening talk and then bring everyone interested to another spot for a deeper discussion.

SuperHappyDevHouse will start at 1pm and run until 10pm. Currently the GOAP plan to hang out with us from 3pm to 7pm. For the time that they are here we want to use the lightening talks to show them what real innovative startups in Bangalore are doing.

UnPluggd’s fourth edition was a huge success. And while I am writing this under a sluggish Internet connectivity, let me share that moving away from our ‘comfort zone’ of Bangalore was a big decision for us.

By comfort zone, I just don’t mean the audience etc. (we have a damn good readership across the country), but of handling operations/managing vendors/partners in a remote location. Given that we are a super lean/thin organization, doing a full-fledged event meant putting up a lot of things at stake.e

But then, thanks to all our supporters/partners – UnPluggd has upped the bar for everybody. Though not a direct indicator, but the event (which didn’t even have a wifi at the venue) was trending in India and all thanks to great stuff that came out of speakers/demo companies.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners/supporters who believed in us and helped in making UnPluggd a GRAND success.

UnPluggd: Sponsors

We’d like to thank our sponsors:

Volunteers – Vivek Gupta, Vishwa (Founder of Eventnu), Ashutosh Mahajan and Jayanth Ramesh.

And to the audience that came from Pune, Mumbai, NCR, Nagpur, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and all over the country. It was a great experience having you at the event and we will soon share details of the companies presented/speaker videos etc. on the site.

UnPluggd is a unique mix of entrepreneurial stories and demos from emerging startups. At UnPluggd, we bring speakers who have an inspiring story to share with the audience and the past editions witnessed stories that range from failure to struggle and importantly, the art of NOT giving up.

At the upcoming edition (scheduled for Nov 19th/Pune), we have 5 amazing speakers who will share their entrepreneurial journey and how they built a business in spite of the challenges faced.

- For instance, Brewcrafts (Doolally’s parent company) couldn’t get the license to start a micro-brewery company in India. So what did the founders do? Cribbed and gave up? NO. They actually took Indian government officials to Singapore to help them understand what Micro-brewery is and eventually got a license to start microbrewing in India. Cofounder, Suketu will talk about the Doolally journey at UnPluggd.

- “You cannot build a global R&D center from India. The storage story is almost over”. These were the words from investors/industry pundits to Gluster Cofounder, Anand Babu Periasamy. And the team proved them wrong! Gluster was recently acquired by RedHat for $136mn.

Other speakers include

Vishwas Mahajan – Cofounder of CompuLink, one of the few product companies from India that achieved INR 100 crores in revenue within 10 years of existence.

Mukul Kumar, Pubmatic Co-founder will talk about the Pubmatic journey.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, One97 founder will talk about the journey from a startup to a multi-million dollar company.

As far as startup demos are concerned, we have 10 demos+ 1 Hack demoing at the event – selected from a long list of companies that applied for the demo slot. The demoing companies represent various industries – right from LBS to Enterprise, Cloud infrastructure etc.

As far as attendees are concerned, they will follow the UnPluggd trend – i.e. a LOT (and we mean LOT) of entrepreneurs, geeks, angel investors and VCs, though in an informal setup.

UnPluggd is scheduled for this Saturday and while the Pluggd.in team is super excited about the event (our first mega event outside Bangalore), we thought we will use this opportunity to answer a few FAQs that we have been getting from attendees.

But before we share the FAQs, we would like to share that those who are coming from Mumbai to Pune have a reason to rejoice. Our friends at Olacabs have created a special page: http://www.olacabs.com/unpluggd for attendees to book cabs – either a full cab or shared cabs. And most importantly, the system has an inbuilt 10% discount on cab price! So plan your trip and do a bit of pre-networking before the event (also use the UnPluggd Facebook group for finding partners)

And now the FAQs

Qn: Spot Registration? Can I pay at the venue?

Answer: Yes. Spot Registration is possible, please share your details here (otherwise, do come over directly to the venue and hop to the ‘Payment’ counter).

QN: The most frequently asked question is ‘Who from Investor world are attending the event?”

Answer: Well. Pretty much all the names you hear in the circuit . And importantly, a LOT of angel investors. Having said that, one thing we’d like to stress is that meeting investors shouldn’t be the ONLY reason to attend UnPluGGd. Attend UnPluGGd for some serious talk on building a technology business, to meet fellow entrepreneurs and open up new partnership channels.

QN: I have a discount coupon (for the ticket). Can I use it at the venue?

Answer: No. If at all you have a discount coupon, it can only be availed from our ticketing partner website (link: doattend, ayojak). At the venue, you will have to pay the normal price, i.e. Rs. 700/.

QN: What’s the agenda/speaker list?

Answer: Do check out the details here (also embedded towards the end of this article).

Qn: Event Venue/Date?

Broadly speaking, speakers range from different industry categories to different stage of their startup journey – right from 5 year old brewery to entepreneurs building a global business from India. The only thing common across these speakers is the practical/actionable insights and experience they will share with the audience.

- As far as startup demos are concerned, we have an exciting list of startups who will demo/launch their product at the event (across different categories/sectors).

- A general FAQ has been around investor participation – well, there will be VCs/Angels attending the event, but UnPluggd’s focus is on entrepreneurs, the center of startup ecosystem. So meet a lot of entrepreneurs/form business partnership and be open to meet VCs/Angels.

And now, the agenda:

UnPluggd Agenda

To start off, let me introduce to you, Anand Babu Periasamy – the cofounder of Gluster.

Gluster was recently acquired by RedHat for $136 million (all cash deal) and Anand will share the Gluster journey with the audience. What’s important about the journey is that a bunch of VCs told Gluster team that

Storage is a dead business

You cannot build a global R&D (+product) from India.

That is, the regular stuff you get to hear regarding the Indian startup ecosystem. But the Gluster team proved them wrong and built a global business.

At UnPluggd, Anand will share the journey in the typical UnPluggd style!

For those who have already filled up the nomination form, they will start hearing from us today (late) evening onwards.

If you are wondering why nominate, here are a few testimonials from some of the startups who demoed at the previous UnPluggd event(s ).

“Presenting at UnPluggd increased our visibility in the start-up eco-system. Infact, couple of our hires have been readers of Pluggdin who found about us through the blog post on UnPluggd.” – Suruchi Wagh, COO, Next Leap

“Unpluggd gave us more visibility and credibility in the Indian market. It also connected us with the right people in terms of technology investing and mentorship.” – Raj, Recruiterbox

“After the event couple of users started developing on the platform, one of them developed across multiple platform and rated us the best as per his evaluation” – Atul, Kookoo.

“Unpluggd was a great experience. I was able to make rapid progress both in anticipation of presenting at UnPluggd and to deliver to the promises made. Close to 150 new users signed up for updates and many participants mailed me with valuable feedback. I was also approached by few entrepreneurs and VCs” – Harsh (Appcanvas)

Like I shared earlier, I wasn’t a big fan of Hackathon because most of them focus on ‘kewl’ stuff rather than something more meaningful. Not that there is anything wrong with kewl stuff, but I couldn’t locate any fit with Pluggd.in and these cool things. For me, personally – its very important that there is some working prototype/hack after 2.5 days.

In fact, when we were ideating on hackathon, a startup founder (+ good friend) suggested us not to worry so much about the Indian startup API (as per him, “developers will still prefer a white skin API vs. Indian – call it racist, but that’s the hard reality. There isn’t so much of respect for Indian companies API ”).

And we took a bet. We brought 2 very good API platforms (Zomato and Kookoo) to the event and the result was phenomenal. We also experimented with ‘sponsored projects’ – AngelPrime sponsored few tickets and the hack by Swaroop is a testimonial of the bet we took. It won’t be wrong to say that the event has set standards for others to follow.

The Pluggd.in Hackathon has witnessed some of the most amazing hackers from the country (hackers have come from Hyderabad/Chennai/Mumbai/Pune and of course, Bangalore) hacking at the 2.5 days event.

The Pluggd.in Hackathon has witnessed some of the most amazing hackers from the country (hackers have come from Hyderabad/Chennai/Mumbai/Pune and of course, Bangalore) hacking at the 2.5 days event.

Well, we started a bit late (sincere apologies), but it was quite a challenge to fight the rain gods. In fact, some of the hackers called up on Friday and asked us if we plan to postpone the event owing to heavy rains.

Well, if you are a serious hacker, you cannot let such stuff come your way. We started the event a bit late, but the amazing part about the hackers was that most of them were very clear on the idea and what they plan to achieve during the 2 days.
Apart from talks by Zomato and Kookoo team regarding their APIs, we also had a great session by Ravi Pratap, cofounder of Mobstac. Ravi walked us through his geeky days to starting Mobstac.

Soundbytes from several attendees are that they have attended several hackathons and most of such events had ‘wannabes’ at the event (i.e. wannabe hackers, wannabe entrepreneurs) and hence the discussion ended up with ‘how do I raise fund?’ etc. But the Pluggd.in Hackathon has a LARGE chunk of entrepreneurs, founders, geeks working for startups – i.e. a much evolved audience who just wanted to do 1 thing – i.e. hack. Importantly, hackers have mostly used APIs from India companies – a feat that we are certainly proud of and have set a trend for others to follow.

Hackathon: Teams/Ideas

All in all, a total of 19 teams have been formed with ideas ranging from creating a Ziri (watchout Siri) to creating personal cloud, creating DealRadio et al. Here are some of the interesting projects (selected randomly):

Hackodex: Create a video chat app for hackers (help them build teams/connect with other hackers).

Sudo-code: Zomato comparator + mine user choices to rank restaurants better

iMote: Creating a remote controller using a mobile phone

DealRadio: Deal Radio using APIs from Offergrid, Zomato and Kookoo (+latlong).

HotBuild: Continuous Integration – testing on cloud as a serivce (RoR)

FrigateBird: Parsing SMS and emails – and actions on content

PersonalCloud: Cloud for individuals which will automate the communication between devices or servers on the cloud

Ziri: The Ziri for India.

Pluggd.in’s Hackathon starts today and we thought we will introduce some of the hackers to all. So here goes details of few hackers and what they plan to hack at the event.

Rohan Dey

Who am I?
I’m Rohan 19yr. old entrepreneur and php/node dev. My Hobbies are traveling, music, sports, exploring NBT ideas and coding late at night!

What I would like to do/solve at Pluggd.in’s Hackathon?
I would like to build a social utility which would allow people to discover like minded peers having common interests and chat with them.

Skills set/expertise/person i am looking for the idea?
I am looking for a designer who is passionate about creating magical user experience.

Gaurav Lochan

Who Am I?

A techie, having earned my stripes at Microsoft and VMware and Akimbi (a startup that was acquired by VMware). Now working on a startup idea of my own, doing some android dev these days and wearing non-techie hats too.

What I would like to do/solve at Pluggd.in’s Hackathon.
I have a simple idea around capturing personal medical records using a smartphone. Often, when the doctor asks me for a previous prescription/diagnosis, i don’t have it handy. But I’m not tied to this idea only – Looking to build something cool, and meet good folks.

Skills looking for:
- Designer – would really like to get a good designer to collaborate with here.
- Web developer – can use any of the frameworks (ruby / django-python / php / java)
- I can do the android stuff, but can also use help from other devs if they’re interested. And we could try doing it on other platforms.

Akshay Surve

Who am I?

I’m a Serial Social Innovator by the day – initiator of SocialSync.org, Ads4Good.org and OpenCivic.in; and a Code Warrior by night – Ruby on Rails, NoSQL and Node.js is part of my current artillery. In essence I am a ‘Startup Jockey‘. Apart from writing code, I enjoy running, hiking and meeting interesting people.

What I would like to do/solve at Pluggd.in’s Hackathon.

I would be _cooking_ *delicious* Publisher Widgets for Zomato using the Zomato API.

Rationale:

I seriously want to promote Indian startups who have released their APIs in the open; I definitely want to promote more devs to use these APIs creatively.

Easily embeddable widgets are a game winner for any local listing startup. I was really surprised seeing very few of the Zomato competitors have any widgets of their own; Zomato has one on their website. I really feel this is a game winner for Zomato – to gain scalable traction and visibility.

Take a look at some of them:

Introducing Kookoo, a cloud telephony startup and our partner for the upcoming Hackathon (they demoed at UnPluggd’s second edition).

For the winning team, we will give a CPBX account for 3 months for free with a startup plan –http://cpbx.in . It is a virtual cloud based phone system which the team can use as a professional phone system for their business.

All teams building on KooKoo will get a free account(silver egg) and phone number for the next two months.

All teams building on KooKoo will also get a 4 GB Pen drive.

One team selected by us ,out of the teams building on KooKoo , will get 5 Golden Eggs for a period of 3 months.

What is KooKoo?

KooKoo is an interface between your web application and the caller. It takes phone commands from you and executes them on your behalf to the caller. The best way to think of KooKoo is as just another web page in your application. Only difference is, the web page is accessible from the phone rather than the browser. So KooKoo is the fastest way to make your data available on the phone channel.

How does Kookoo work?

1. Caller calls the KooKoo number.

2. KooKoo informs your application.

3. You tell KooKoo what to do (Play some text, collect input, send sms, record etc).

4. KooKoo performs the action on your behalf.

5. KooKoo sends you the result of the action to your application.

What are the tags available?

response: This is the root tag

playtext: Play some text to your callers

playaudio: Play some audio to your callers

collectdtmf: Collect user input from your callers

record: Record caller conversation

conference: Conference multiple callers

hangup: Disconnect current caller

dial: Make an outbound call

More info about the tags can be found at http://www.kookoo.in/index.php/kookoo-docs

What can you create using the KooKoo API?

Almost anything related to Phones . KooKoo is specifically useful to create mashups. Take an API, mix it with KooKoo and you have a phone mashup.

1. For example, take Zomato’s API, mix it with KooKoo API and you can have call to review mashup, or call to get reviews mashup etc.

2. Take Twitter API, mix it with KooKoo and have a call to tweet mashup(http://blog.kookoo.in/2010/12/add-voice-to-your-twitter-account-using.html).

3. Take Google places API, mix it with KooKoo and create a Justdial (http://blog.kookoo.in/2011/06/build-local-search-on-phone-using.html).

Also, KooKoo can be used to build business stuff like PBX systems, IVR systems etc by maybe hacking OpenVBX(http://www.openvbx.org/).

To get more ideas that can be built using KooKoo, you can have a look at the 314 mashups on Twilio available on programmable web at http://www.programmableweb.com/api/twilio/mashups

Check out the blog(http://blog.kookoo.in) for more interesting ideas.

—————-

It’s been exactly a year since Unpluggd 2. I got hitched that day, to my current startup. Today when I recall that day, it might feel as if it was only a co-incidence that I met the founders at an event and not at their office for a formal interview. Put a second thought to it and you will realize that a formal interview may have never happened. Even if it ever did, the outcome may not have been the same.

The problem with formal interview is that people come prepared to sell themselves. Both the buyer and seller are prepared for it. The preparedness isn’t the problematic part but the fact that the other party knows that you have come prepared specifically to sell to him is the problem. Both parties go into a defensive mode and things take longer than required to materialize.

Networking at events are meant to remove the anticipation of preparedness of the other party. Industry events are a great place for initiating casual conversations and then converting it into business. Everybody is moving around looking to strike a conversation. No one is pitching to any one. A business deal comes out of a conversation. There is no “buyer” or “seller” sitting across a table until a deal has already happened.

Specially for shy people like us, who have a lot of apprehension about picking up the phone and making that cold call, events provide a great ice-breaker. There are lot of people around, just tap anyone on the shoulder and start a conversation. Start with easy questions like name, company etc. which is just too dumb to ask on a cold call but not as much in an industry event. Whether you will close a deal during that conversation is not luck but a trick.

The trick of closing deals at events is in coming prepared. At an event of 500 people, there are 499 opportunities waiting to mate with your preparedness and conceive a “lucky deal” for you. Just like babies are not conceived by chance (no they are not, no matter what your grandmother says), luck is also never by chance. You always create your luck. You come prepared with one half of the ingredients and then look around for the right other half. When you find them, your preparedness is tested and then deals happen.

It’s just like walking into a night club with the right perfume, the perfect shoes, practiced dance moves and then casting out the perfect pick up line, waiting for her to react. Yes, it’s not easy, the thought of it would make non-sales people like us nervous. But think of the result, if the act works out, you won’t walk out of the club the way you walked in. Business events are no different, the preparedness required isn’t any lesser, nor is the prize worth any less. You should always know whether you want to walk out with a co-founder, a new hire, a new job, a new client, a better vendor or a potential investor. If you are not prepared you won’t even realize when the beautiful blonde would step on your shoes and walk to the stud on the other side of the dance floor. An opportunity will be missed.

When you know what you are looking for, come prepared.

People who come prepared always walk out with more than just hangover (read inspiration) for the same ticket price. If you want inspiration, you can always follow the tweets and watch the event’s web casting live, in the same way that you can get a hangover even when you drink alone at home. But that’s not what night clubs are meant for, and that’s not what events are meant for. The kick from the drink is only meant for setting the mood right. The loud music isn’t meant to sooth your ears but to cut the noise from the adjacent table. You go to any business event and you will find these ingredients. The Casanovas of the business world always know that these are not the end but means to an end.

Unpluggd is happening again, this November, on the 19th, in Pune. Come prepared and get hitched!

The organizers have made it easier for you this time. Join the unpluggd group on Facebook to know who all will be there. Zero in your targets, come prepared and catch them unguarded.

If you are going to decide on the last day to show up and then expect magic to happen, well then you need to come out of your Bollywood mode where babies happen just by thinking about it.

A wise networker once said, ” ‘A man walks into a bar…’ is not even a complete joke by itself, how do you expect ‘An entrepreneur attends an event…’ to be any better, unless you know what happens next.”

Happy networking! Happy mating!

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and when we announced Hackathon, we had no idea of what it could turn into.

Well, we now have startups asking for the next Hackathon date (they are now working on exposing their APIs) to partners coming along with ideas and concepts for the Hackathon.
Today, we are glad to share that our partner, AngelPrime team is sponsoring 5 tickets for the upcoming Hackathon (scheduled for this weekend).

AngelPrime is an incubator launched by Sanjay Swamy (ex-mChek) and Snapfish Cofounders, Bala and Shripati and the team has couple of ideas for all ye hackers and designers.

Details: 5 Tickets Sponsored By AngelPrime Team

In their own words:

–
We’d like to invite great people to take up the challenge to design and implement prototypes for the following – ONLY us

ing open-source stacks:

A great transaction browser
Goodbye to the boring spreadsheet/table/database look – that’s passe’. How would you change how we view banking and other transactions online? Show us your best – allow consumers to tag transactions, add comments, create categories on the fly, post to Facebook/Twitter etc.

A great SMS and email parser that makes sense of SMS’s and emails
Keywords are passe’ – we can make sense from SMS’s without requiring keywords by doing a textual search and tag. Build us a great SMS parser that uses open-source tools.

For those who do address these problems and work on delivering us great solutions, we will be happy to reimburse their cost of attending the Pluggd. In hackathon (costs INR 1,800).

–

It’s an Indian tradition to cleaup one’s house during Diwali – people do it inside out (white washing etc etc) and following the same trend, startups too need to clean up their house.

That is?

Features: P1>P2>P3..?

Many a times (actually most of the times), you end up deprioritizing some features who lose out to other important ones. They end up becoming a P2 feature – and eventually the list of P2s pile up and is generally lost in the entire (product) development cycle.

Bring back the list and ask yourself – which ones were really important? There are a certain P3/P4 requirements (like change the logo in company’s Facebook page, messaging changes etc.) which are generally lost in the ‘big scheme of things’.

Can one of those P3/P4 features make the product look more appealing? If yes, then do it.

Features: P3<P2<P1<Lean And Thin

This Diwali, remove junk from your existing feature set. There are features that exist in your product which nobody knows of! Can you get rid of that junk?

Fire up your Google Analytics, track pages and cleanup the mess. The baggage of junk features, sometimes gets in the way of scaling and use Diwali as an excuse to cut the flab.

The Dog Food

Of course, the dog has to eat the dogfood and Pluggd.in will share the cleanup drive we are conducting on the site. There are few sections which were full of ‘junk’ and we have decided to cull them off. We are also coming up with improved UX in the coming days – so stay Pluggd.in!

And meanwhile, Pluggd.in team wishes Happy Diwali to all! Enjoy the firecrackers! Have a good time with your family.

And do tell us what mess are you cleaning today?

Pluggd.in’s Hackathon, India’s first Hackathon targeted towards homegrown companies is scheduled for November 4th (3 PM onwards), 5th and 6th in Bangalore. The core idea behind the Hackathon is to get geeks, designers, marketers – all under one roof and get them to Hack.

Like we said earlier, the Hackathon has a much BIGGER agenda than stated.

1. 2 winning entries get to demo their hack at UnPluggd, India’s largest startup event.

2. For the first time ever, Indian homegrown companies will be able to market their APIs at any Hackathon platform (read: Pluggd.in’s Hackathon: The What, When And Why Of It!). In short, we dare to try stuff which others haven’t even thought about.

And today, we are glad to announce our first Hackathon partner – Zomato.

Zomato APIs @Hackathon = Fun + iPad

Zomato is a NCR based startup that offers listings of restaurants/foodie joints/lifestyle places in 10 cities. The company has 17,800 listed restaurants and served 1,425,634 foodies alone in the month of September, 2011.

Zomato launched its API few days back and at Hackathon, you get to play with the API and create cool stuff around it (API link: http://www.zomato.com/api)

The API lets you search in our 18,000 restaurants, covering 10 major cities in India, based on various criteria. Details of all the features provided by our API is provided in the documentation, along with example code. Further, we have also provided an API Sandbox, where you can test your requests. Zomato’s mobile applications use the same API – you can also refer to them for ideas and potential uses of the API.

Now coming to the main point – i.e the most delicious part about the Hackathon! Create damn cool stuff using Zomato API and you get to win an iPad!

The iPad goes out to the most creative app/best use case of Zomato’s API and for the others who work on Zomato API, they also stand to win some very cool stuff.

Need more convincing :- ) Just come over. And Hack.

The Pluggd.in Hackathon, one of its kind and the first Hackathon in India that “actually” focuses on Indian companies is scheduled for November 4th (3 PM onwards), 5th and 6th.

While the Pluggd.in team is working hard to create an immensely great experience for hackers, here are a common FAQs that will help you understand more about the event:

Qn: I do not have a team. Can I Participate?

Answer: YES. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.(Lao-tzu)”. So come over.

Qn: Frankly, I do not have an idea. Can I still participate?

Answer: YES.

Come over. There will be a lot of people who will have amazing ideas. Talk to them and you will soon find yourself hacking along.

Qn: Is it that I am expected to ONLY use the APIs from Indian companies?

Answer: NOT at all. Come up with your own stuff, your own creation and as you see-fit, use APIs from homegrown companies (this ain’t mandatory though).

Qn: The winning entries get to demo at UnPluggd (in Pune). Who arranges for the travel? cost etc?

Answer: You. We are giving you a BIG platform to launch your product. Like any other participant, you are expected to arrange for your travel etc.

Qn: I am working for <a big (MNC) company>. Can I still participate?

Answer: YES.

Qn: We are a startup and would like to send our team to develop stuff that we have been planning for quite some time (and never got the time to). Shall we?

Answer: YES. Use this opportunity. You will be amazed to see the results.

Qn: I am a student. Can I participate?

Answer: YES. We have students coming from B-schools to participate in the event. Do connect with us (for a special discount meant only for students)

Qn: Is it necessary for winning entries to demo @UnPluggd?

Answer: NOT at all. It’s your choice and will be a function of your seriousness towards going full-time with the product.

Qn: I am not a geek, but a marketer/sales guy/girl. Should I participate?

Anwer: Why not? Building a product requires multiple hats – but ensure that you are willing to learn (new stuff), unlearn and open to news ideas. That is, if you are enterprising by nature, you should be present at Hackathon

Qn: Is there a winning prize also?

Answer; Yeah baby! Wait for Monday and we will announce that (and trust us, you will love it!)

Qn: Can I pay at the venue?

Answer: Yes. But we recommend that you buy tickets online (helps us plan the operations).

Qn: Who are the mentors?

Answer: Details will be announced next week.

Qn. Do I have to buy both Hackathon and UnPluggd tickets?

Answer: Not at all. Buy tickets individually (link: http://unpluggd4.ayojak.com OR http://unpluggd.doattend.com). There is no association between the two events as far as ticketing is concerned.

The CODE_n Global Innovation Contest is searching for extraordinary IT start-ups worldwide. It is targeted to all those who want to change the future with their innovative IT-based solutions on the topic “Shaping mobile life”. The 50 most creative entrepreneurs will present their ideas in a spectacular setting at the CeBIT 2012 fair. The winning prize is 25,000 Euros as well as two-year coaching from experienced managers.

Smartphones, social media, the latest app: mobile solutions are becoming more and more central to our lives and work. And each innovation seems to come faster than the last, capturing our imagination and revolutionising the way we communicate.

Have you also thought up a great IT idea that could shape the future? A digital business solution perhaps, a concept to make the mobile life of consumers or business people even more mobile? If you have, then we’d like to invite you to take part in an international innovation contest: CODE_n12.

CODE_n12 is about anything and everything new. The contest’s theme is “Shaping Mobile Life”, and its aim is to uncover the 50 best business ideas for digital mobile solutions. The winners will be showcased at the world’s leading technology show, CeBIT, which takes place in Hanover from 6 to 10 March 2012.

Whether your idea is an imaginative IT-based business concept, a new type of product or an innovative application, the CODE_n12 contest is a unique opportunity for all kinds of business start-ups, recently founded companies and high-flying IT experts to display their solution before an international audience – and become part of a global innovation network. Submissions can be innovative hardware or software, services or technology.

The CODE_n12 initiative was launched by GFT Technologies and is supported by renowned Strategic Partners: Ernst & Young, Fujitsu Technologies Solutions, Deutsche Messe, BITKOM and ZKM. A jury of leading IT experts, scientists and business specialists will judge all entries before selecting the 50 most promising concepts. To provide a suitable setting for the ideas at CeBIT 2012, internationally renowned artist Tobias Rehberger and the architect Jürgen Mayer H. have designed a spectacular innovation showroom, which will also be the meeting point for the avant-garde of IT.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The nomination process for India’s largest startup event, UnPluggd has begun and starting today, we will accept the nomination from startups to demo at the event.

As with UnPluggd’s last editions, 10 startups will be selected to demo their products at the event and the selection process involves Pluggd.in team (Ashish & Pratyush to be precise) + Panel of Judges (we will be announcing the panel very soon).

Most importantly, we are conducting a Hackathon 2 weeks before the event and 2 winning entries from Hackathon will get a chance to demo their product at UnPluggd.

Demoing at UnPluggd

Grab an opportunity to demo your product in front of India (and South East Asia)’s Entrepreneurial + Business & Investor audience – and gain that ‘extra edge’ over your competition. If you are a technology product startup and can fight your way to grab the demo slot (only 10) in front of India’s most active angel investors, VC and early adopter community, potential customers – grab your chance.

Send in your nomination right away (last date to apply is Nov 6th) – here is the link to nomination form(form also embedded at the end of this post).

Nomination FAQs

Qn: Who Can Apply?

Early stage technology product startups. Preference is given to startups who are launching at UnPluggd.

Qn: What is the Nomination Process like?
Once the nomination is closed (deadline is Nov 6th), 30 companies will be selected and these companies will be contacted via email. We (i.e. the panel) will schedule meetings/skype conference with the companies in order to understand their business in depth. Out of 30, the final list of presenting startups (10) will be selected.

Qn: Who sees my submission?
The Pluggd.in team (Ashish Sinha & Pratyush Prasanna). At a later stage, we will announce the panel and you can choose not to share details with a panel member, if you aren’t comfortable with the names (for competitive reasons).

If you are selected for further rounds, we will get in touch with you to discuss more details/process.

Qn: I want to launch my product at UnPluggd!

Nothing like launching your product at an event where you can derive maximum eye balls – right from angel investors to VCs, media and most importantly, early adopters. Send in your nomination right away.

Qn: Do presenting companies have to pay?
Nothing. Presenting companies DO NOT have to pay to showcase at the event. Having said that, you will have to bear your travel/stay/entry charges.

Qn: What about Nomination? Is it free?
Yes. Free as in, Free.

Qn: We are still developing the product and plan to launch it by Nov. Are we eligible?
In general, we don’t want to showcase just prototypes, but we suggest that you go ahead and nominate your startup. If you have a matured prototype (with thought-thru’ use cases), we would surely love to have you at the event.

Qn: I am a services company. Should I apply?
Pluggd.in has always been about product startups and that’s where we will focus this time too. Of course the event itself would be a great opportunity to meet potential customers, startups and cool people.

Qn: We haven’t yet started making money. Shall we nominate ourselves?
Well, it takes a while for product companies to monetize in India. We respect IP (Intellectual Properties) and would love to have your nomination.

Qn: Who are the VCs attending the event?

Pretty much all the known names. Apart from VC firms, a lot of angel investors will be present at India’s finest Startup event, UnPluggd.

Qn: I have more questions.
Do join our Facebook group (http://facebook.com/groups/unpluggd/) and ask the question there itself. Otherwise, you can ask here (in the comment section) or get in touch asap [email: ashish@pluggd.in]. Do mention “UnPluggd” in the subject line.

——————

Block Your Seat

You can block your seat (for Hackathon/UnPluggd) from either of the two ticketing sites: Ayojak or DoAttend.

Discount Code: PIBUDDY (for UnPluggd tickets) and HACKBUDDY (Hackathon).
