SRK and the suave Katrina Kaif top the most downloaded Bollywood Mobile content, as per the study conducted by IMIMobile.

Priyanka Chopra rules the wap sites (she beat SRK) and Kishore Kumar rules the voice recording messages/prompts.

Surprisingly, Rajasthan is the most active state followed by TN and Punjab when it comes to downloading mobile content (any idea why?).

Industry Stats:

  • Royalties worth approximately Rs 50-60 crore (Rs 500-600 million) were paid to the music industry in the past 18 months.
  • Value added services – of which music with full song downloads, music videos and ring tones forms the bulk – are estimated to contribute 15-20 per cent to the overall telecommunication company revenues.
  • About 400,000-500,000 ring tones are downloaded daily
  • Mono and polyphonic ring tones currently sell at a 75/25 ratio, while the fastest-growing ring tone genre is ring back tones with about 3.5 million users.
  • Mobile music downloads top the bill and are currently valued at Rs 160-180 crore (Rs 1.6-1.8 billion) in the domestic market. – source

Bollywood is surely a cash cow for Mobile VAS, but the bigger question is will Mobile VAS remain in the confines of Bollywood (IRCTC claimed that they could sell only 921 tickets from wap site).

What’s your opinion?

Well Guys, India is yet another upcoming market for just about EVERYTHING. Examples are clear-cut I guess. People are looking for mobile content throughout India, I guess the trend will go towards a rise in near future.

I guess.. the debate should be, is Mobile VAS == Mobile Entertainment? Is it worth to anything else in mobile VAS other than semi porn stuff and cater to the lowest common denominator?

Also its well known fact that around 20% of the revenue is paid to the content creator. So for a payout of USD 500 Million, the total revenue would have been $2.5 Billion. An IAMAI report had once said that the total VAS market would be around $ 1 Billion by 2007. I guess that was way off the mark! Here’s an old post about that report.

Rajiv – Glad that you mentioned “semi porn” stuff – wanted to put that, but didnt!
Yes, I believe most of so-called mobile VAS is about the semi-porn content (infact that’s the first thing I see when I launch AIrtel Live on my cell)

I am wondering whether there is any serious consumer demand for LBS apps?

Ashish, looks like entertainment content will always dwarf other segments. They’ll remain niche. Not mass market.
