TastyKhana

Is TastyKhana tasty enough?

Another burrp?

It goes a step further – gives you deals, packages, centralized table reservations (right now only in Pune), online food ordering.

The process – pretty complicated. Scalable? Doubtful.

Not a well thought out product, me thinks.

Party orders – On searching for packages, you get different choices. After u choose the package based on the menu & the price, you can see the restaurant name. My opinion – when it comes to food, doesn’t it work the other way round?

Create bills online? Who would want to see the bills even before eating?

All in all, I can’t see them making money anytime soon!

Ouch!

NGOPost

NGOPost is a social networking/digg like site for NGOs.
A good concept for a very niche audience. Can even have a global impact of done well.
The only problem I foresee is getting the people in.

They’re looking for funding & for feedback on. their site, new ideas.

HelloIntern

Have difficulty getting internship opportunities? Check out HelloIntern.

GenPortal

GenPortal is a site to help startups helping you connect with the ‘right audience’ aka venture capitalists (they’ve got 63 VCs including Canaan partners, Sherpalo). A place to put up your ideas, mentoring, funding, forum to network with.

Hey Reshma, thanks for your views on TastyKhana… would like to add in some points

Our aim is not to be directory listing (many local search guys out there to do that, much better than us!), we will provide actual solutions to end users and businesses

Parties – we think what matters most is to make sure the party was rocking – “we assure that”. Every party dynamically updated with all the intangible not on paper feedback… u will never get that from the restaurant…

Something about the menu and prices… let me explain the sentiment behind this – “Feel like you ate your hearts content, you liked the place and THEN came the bill!” – we call this informed decision upto the last level … and just to add the menu process is completed automated

The process being complicated? We take that as feedback…

It was great being at the camp today, meet people and share ideas…

      Thanks
      Sheldon

“All in all, I can’t see them making money anytime soon!”

ouch ouch ouch lol reshma madam dont be too harsh :p you should read more of ashish’s posts :D

“when it comes to food, doesn’t it work the other way round?”

not necessarily.. when it is a party order :p

anyway my thoughts on tastykhana website is that the design and UI needs a big overhaul at present its very shabby. too much options confuse the user. they are on the right track as I can see they are looking for a webdesigner ;)

NGOpost is linked wrong in the article… its http://ngopost.org the concept is good but the website is just a pligg.com install with the default template.. IMO atleast some customisation should be done…. the success of the website will totaly depend on getting people and combating spam :D they have not even changed the meta content… but the concept I like it

Hellointern is there for a long time.. they have also won a few laurels as a business concept.. they should bring in more established companies this ‘startup buzz’ wont work much with the freshers ;) they concentrate on opportunities in India but strangely their europe thread in the forum has lot of posts than india’s. on the whole HI is a good niche concept I wished was there when I was in college ;)

I guess genportal is a better website compared to others above.. I think $$$ does its job here ;) the concept is pretty much in need as it has an easy interface to get your ideas to the VCs.. only 4 startups are listed guess more will see an opportunity as time progresses. regarding the website they are using a old version of vbulletin forum 3.6.4 which has known vulnerabilities…

good to see lot of ideas taking off but the fact to worry is that most of them are poorly presented which is a big turn off…

wtf I wrote too much lol

    3. Ashish says:

Hey Jagannath – Have corrected the link.
I agree with you that most of these ideas are kind of “quite okay” to have (even Twitter is an ‘okay’ idea!), but what they really lack is packaging/presentation.

And ngopost, as you rightly said is a big turnoff for me (personally) – did they create the site a day before bcm? What is the objective of the site? I dunno – and don’t see much of a benefit in the portal.

    4. Nitin Gupta says:

      Hi Ashish and Jagannath,

Thanks for your feedback on NGO Post. I am one of the team members and am happy to reply to your concerns.

Customization: You are right that we have retained the default pligg template, and the technical reason for it is that (i) it is a clean template that serves our purpose well (it’s more usable than customized templates that some other sites have made, only for the sake of looking different), and (ii) it allows us to upgrade to new pligg versions easily. That said, I should mention that we have made several changes to the server-side code (e.g. search, finding related stories, tags etc. to get results that make more sense for our users), as well as some (e.g. terminology) at the client-side. Soon we will be rolling out some major changes to the GUI based on the feedback we’ve received.

Spam: In any web 2.0 site, this is a major problem, and we have had our share of spam-attacks that we have managed to survive. In the process, we have put in several checks and balances to reduce the number of spams (and they seem to be paying so far). But I totally understand that spammers can always find new ways.. we will continue trying our best to check them.

Objective: The site is targeted to the people who are either involved in social work or just have a casual interest in social work, providing a place to share information about different ideas and ongoing projects. The social sector is plagued from wastage of time and energy because of lack of information about what already exists. NGO Post aims to provide a single place where all social-work related information can be shared between the users.

Getting users: One of our main challenge is indeed getting users, and one of the problems is that some section of our target audience is not tech-savvy. Nevertheless, we are spending a lot of effort into reaching out to people and organizations worldwide. Given the social-work focus of this website, getting users is a much bigger challenge for us than just the technology, and much tougher than, say, for a site focused on movie gossips etc.

Also want to mention that unlike most companies showcased at Barcamp, NGO Post is a non-profit effort, not aimed at making money but at helping the social-work sector. But that shouldn’t be an excuse for mediocrity of any kind, so if you have more feedback/criticisms, please keep them coming!

      Nitin
