iPhone- Early Adopter’s curse?

June 11, 2008

The new iPhone is “Twice as fast, Half the price” – and that has left many early adopters fuming!

The newer version of iPhone will be launched on July 11th and is bundled with following features:

  • 3G support
  • Location aware, Enterprise-friendly
  • Support for MS Exchange
  • App store,
  • Developer APIs (developers will keep 70% of revenues)

As an early adopter who enjoyed the “fame” and “attention” (i.e. show-off), how do you feel about the new iPhone?

Envy (for those who are buying at “Half the price, Twice the speed”)?
Wrath (over Apple for selling “double the price, half the speed” product)?

Well, this is a classic case of early adopters curse and I do hope iPhone does something about it!

Should companies have an early adopter fund (i.e. replacement option) or a cheaper upgrade option? After all, Apple owes it’s success to buzz created by early adopters and can’t make them look silly (and outdated) with newer products!

What do you think?

Aside, the 3G version of iPhone is being launched in India by mid-October.

Isnt there something called instant gratification;-)
Moreover with the curr prices of electronic gadgets dropping to half in a year is the norm.
My sony ericsson (which I bought for 14000) was available for 9000 within 10 months of it being launched.
Also any early adopter fund seems lucrative but wouldn’t it temporarily boost the sale figs of an otherwise normal product?

True Ashish… I even know people who bought iPhone very early from the black market for as high as 50,000! Wonder how big their wrath would be… :) So my frustration on spending 20k on this got diluted. But even bigger trouble is that for the thousands of people who bought iPhone in India from the grey-market/US-friends will not have a choice ‘even if’ Apple gives a discount/replacement/upgrade option. So Indian iPhone owners are basically screwed! :(

But hats off to Apple. Great strategy on pricing & a cool product. I really wish this new thingy has more speaker volume!

@Sridhar – I agree on the instant gratification part. But iPhone is a lot different than other fast moving products like Nokia. It has that “sex appeal” that has suddenly faded with the new version!

    @Sony- Completely agree with you!
All said and done, Apple rule our imagination and shows “WHat’s Possible”!

The comment relates to iPhone coming to India

One of the big advantages of iPhone is the ability to browse internet through a complete browser (safari); check e-mails on internet etc; new features visual voice-mails etc. Additionally, this product is targeted for consumers rather than businesses.

In US AT&T came out with a plan that made sense to the consumers along with unlimited data at an affordable rate. This was necessary to utilize all the features that iPhone offered. I just hope Vodafone and Bharati come up with a similar plan. It would make no sense to use this device just for phone calls.

I read somewhere that to curb jailbreak, v2 iPhones will not be soled online and someone in the Apple store will activate the At & T contract, before handing over the phone.

So, WRATH-To Apple for this and Envy – Those who managed to get it so far…I was waiting for V2 to get it from US, but seems like I’ll have to wait few more months till it’s available with Vodafone. :-(

There are some hidden truths behind the new iphone
first and the most important one is that the 3G phone will have only an instore activation not thru itunes.
What this means is when u buy the 3G iphone u also need to shell extra ammount to buy a 2 year contract with AT&T this would cost additional ammount.

The million dollar question is when will it be available in India?Rumors are that even if Iphone is available it will be the older version not the newer one (No 3G infrastructure what’s the use of a 3G phone)

I have a gut feeling that Iphone when released in India will take the other manufacturers by a storm.
Fingers crossed hope we have gud news regarding “Iphone in INDIA”

  7. [...] iPhone was available for 20K, so there is no reason why they should price the new one (which is twice as fast, half the price) for more than [...]

This is obvious. It has happened earlier and it will happen later. Early adopters, lets face it.
