Apple iPad – Apple, Do not Ignore the Indian Market. Not this time.

Alright. Apple has launched the much awaited tablet, iPad and the entire tech world is buzzing with the new iProduct.

Simply put, iPad is a multi-touch device that redefines web browsing, and viewing rich media on one’s computer.

The screen is 9.7 inches, measured diagonally. So overall, it’s slightly smaller than a magazine. And at just 1.5 lbs and 0.5 inches thin, it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide, 178° viewing angle

The Multi-Touch screen on the iPad uses the same revolutionary technology that’s in an iPhone; and is well integrated with apps store (close ot 140,000 apps available) – more details at the official iPad page.

Apple iPad and India

Traditionally, Apple has ignored India (the apple store was down for almost 15 days and there was hardly any response from Apple on the same), but it’s time Apple revisits it’s India strategy (they earlier shutdown the India support office, owing to backclash regarding outsourcing et al).

And why is India important for Apple?

Look at the query volume for apple iPad from India.

Apple iPad Query Traffic

Apple iPad Query Traffic

India stands second in the query volume (for apple iPad) and even though (and 10th for the keyword ‘apple tablet’).

Ofcourse, the naysayers will say - Indian market isn’t right for iPad etc , but the reality is that there is a curiosity, an interest, an intent. How much of that can be converted to sales is left to Apple.

What’s your opinion?

      Ashish,

Still India is price-sensitive market. In spite of all the hype, we are still not there. Even if we have means we might settle for cheaper product with similar st of features (you can call that Chinese brand or whatever, doesn’t matter). The only thing which you are talking about is the scale here. So, we have the queries and population, even if some percentage of that intent does get converted to real purchase it might be a game for “Apple”.

And the problem is Apple is not known for shipping cheap products, cutting the cost down the line with volume increase (as per Indians those still remain high-priced, even after price slash, because the cheaper alternatives become more cheaper too:))

So Apple and India, I don’t know how to patch?

      • Ashish says:

“Still India is price-sensitive market. ” – not really. You are talking about the overall/mass market.
Look at consumption for high end cars – its happening.

For Apple. its for them to decide whether they want to conquer the virgin territory or let a chinese brand (zpad?) take over.

        • Joseph says:

Who really cares for Apple in India? Apple’s strategy and their stinking monopoly doesnt suit Indian markets at all.

        • bp says:

India is not that much price sensitive or else we wouldn’t be seeing so many iPhones even before its official launch. The fact is Apple has either taken India for granted or neglected it completely. Its upto them to decide how they want to treat us this time and its up to us to decide in what way we return the favour.

    2. abhishek manocha says:

And also, Well, $499 I would say is kind of the right price bracket for iPad. Otherwise, it would have been a big flop this time.

    3. rakshit says:

      Nice post pluggd.in!

    4. I have seen all the details.Let me congratulate on the marvellous achievement. The only hinderance is the price which is very high for a middle class Indian. In Indian rupees it comes to $500XRs.50 = Rs.25,ooo which is very high.So watch about iPad on video and clap and be merry.

      • sumit says:

Price is not that much high i have recently purchased an i pod touch for 24,000 of 64 GB where as waiting fr two more months i could have tried to opt on i pad for 25,00. So i believe the price if far fair enough as they are also providing as 16 GB piece

      • NITIN MALHOTRA says:

price is not high . its upto the expectation of every indian. whereas in concern to middle class indian …, apple havnt made anything in the reach of middle class person …., even headfones cost rs 1900…,

    5. techie says:

It’s highly priced …. It should be priced less than 10,000 INR to beat others in volumes…

    6. Pravin says:

Why can’t these tablet market works like game console market? Sell it cheaper and charge on apps. If that works then it can be made available at 15K in open market.
Volume is not a apple’s cup of tea, they won’t reduce their prices to get volume. Apple will always like to be operating in niche. I agree with this post there is niche that exists in India as well. This is right opportunity to capture on that.

    7. Dev Gogoi says:

      Folks,

“It’s highly priced …. It should be priced less than 10,000 INR”!! dude do u really mean it? come on buddy wake up.. its a fresh apple not the rotten one (imported right from China). Quality matters a lot in “techie” world not the quantity. I am gona buy “iPad” next week let it be $500 or $800.. coz i know for what i am paying. I was waiting 4 it. Pliz give value to the brains, hard-work & inventions not to the copycat hakka noodles. :P

      Cheers!!

    8. I wish they would have picked a better name then iPad! But im still getting it.

    9. Vikash says:

Good luck Dev. tell me when you buy ipad next week. however the official release of Apple says they will ship ipad only starting March. Hope u contacted Steve jobs directly ;)

Its gonna be available for somewhere around INR 30,600 for the 16 Gig WiFi-only model most likely going up in increments of INR 6,200 each for the 32 and 64 Gig models. I don’t see 3G coming, nor the Pad with the supported technology.

    12. Sridhar says:

Trends/Analytics arent always equivalent to conversions!

7% of stackoverflow’s traffic comes from India(http://is.gd/7segQ) but almost no top “contributions” (http://is.gd/7sed1).

    13. Jasbir says:

I read an interesting comment on the iPad at http://wp.me/pImT7-7v. It is called “iPad sir? No thank you” and advises people to wait as there are better solutions on the horizon.

    14. wilfred says:

ipad must be at least 20000::::::40000 with 3G N wi-FI

    15. I don’t think the Ipad will be as successfull as the iphone, as it is not as knew and revolutionary.

    16. The Ipad looks like fun to play with, but I doubt if you can really work with it? But many people will buy it because of it look.

    17. Price is not high enough in terms of Apple, because an Apple head phone costs around 2000INR. The fact is ‘will ipad launch in india with same facilities, apps as in US’? Second thing ipad is not a computer, its just a Big ipod touch/iphone, a kind of doll for gadget freaks, techie.

Anyway lets see the response for ipad in india.

    18. anmol singh says:

U people still don’t get it in India Apple is more of a high class. Brand u just won’t see ny tom Dick harry carrying an iPhone or a MAC , Apple , bose , etc only deliver quality products even. If its for more den 20k or even 30k I wont be surprised but I’m surely buying dis ipad

    19. Jasbir Uppal says:

Is the iPAd all hype and little in the way of innovation? The iPod was designed to capture the music media market, and the iPad is there solely to capture the eBook market and challenge the Kindle and Sony eBook Reader. I read an interesting blog at http://tinyurl.com/ybnvr2k

    20. Hari says:

I am a big Apple fan. Only recently i noticed that Apple is not really interested in getting into India market. With the Apple stores (fanchaised by Reliance), people have now come more closer to Apple. However, I do not see any steps from Apple to start/represent customer service. If you do not have knowledge of Apple computers and you have a problem with your Lap/Desktop, then you are at the mercy of the half-knowledge personnel at iStores.
Sales of iPhones and iPod’s have been very good in India. End of the day, it is not the price, but the customer service which matters. Vodafone and Airtel give iPhone’s on EMI, and I am sure the GSM model of iPad will and can be sold with only a data plan by any of these guys soon.
If you look at iTunes, see how much of India music is available? India has been the biggest markets for mobile music. Nokia is betting big on this. Don’t tell me Apple cannot sell Indian music which will be very well accepted. Apple CA office has loads of Indian’s working and i am sure many would have been proposing this, but it has not been considered seriously.
Even though I love apple and I might be purchasing the iPad (definitely not in India, but will pick it up from US), I am very disappointed with the head-strong approach of the organization. End of the day I know it is not my business to suggest anyone, but if Apple can hear me, i am honoured.

    22. Harry says:

all versions of Ipad available..please mail me at harryrasul@gmail.com for more info.

    23. Anand says:

I totally agree. Apple has totally neglected India and thats why BlackBerry or Nokia is owning the smartphone space in India.

They really cant afford to be at their complacent best, like they are right now due to the sales in the US,otherwise, they will see Android whoop their a** soon.

One other annoying thing I noticed was that the people in the Reliance Imagine store are absolute jacka**es. they have this “genius” mentality and to me it was abso-f**king-lutely unacceptable that they did not have an Iphone 3G stock and they didnt even take the time to talk to me or any of the customers properly.

I think Steve really needs to think about the BIG market that India could turn out to be..

    24. Rocky says:

      Unbelievable
i have purchese apple ipad at just RS-12000 from http://www.techalltime.webs.com
Now a days they have stop the deal for few days but i think they will reopen in 2-3 days as i have asked them by email

    25. The impact this product is going to have on the pc world is big. It will give us a slightly larger excuse to spend time messing around on the cyberspace. I would be influenced to purchase the iPad if it cleaned up my room and did my washing!
